I cannot get djvu to work!

I need to download djvu so that I can download media files faster in Findmypast.co.uk.

I can download djvu, but my mac doesn't seem to know it. I have changed from 64 to 32 bit as needed, but to no avail.

thanks for the interest, but ...

Just been to the site you gave and downloaded anything that would help, but, none open the media on findmypast. The icons sit on my desktop but when i click on them they do nothing, and findmypast doesn't seem to know they are there, but they may be the wrong ones.

Exactly which djvu should i download? i have a mac os x 10.6.8. I run sarfari and firefox. i have made both of them 32 bit which findmypast says they need to be.

any ideas?

hi there. here is what findmypast tells us to do:

Please note: If you are not using Internet Explorer, download the installer to your computer, locate it, and then double click on it to start the installation process.

If you are using a Mac with OS X, click to switch to our enhanced viewer and get installation instructions. Please note that if you have a new 64-bit machine, the enhanced viewer will only work in 32-bit mode - please see our blog for instructions on how to do this.

Our free enhanced image viewer gives faster image downloads.

It is designed to work with the Safari Browser. Please choose the processor relevant to your machine.

1: DjVu Browser Plugin for Mac OS X (Universal)

Download

System Requirements:

* Mac OS X 10.3.9, 10.4, 10.5

* Safari 2 & 3 Browser

2: DjVu Browser Plugin for Mac OS X (PPC)

Download

System Requirements:

* Mac OS X 10.2, 10.3.8

* Safari Browser

Instructions

Your download manager should now open and begin the download.

Once the download has completed, the computer should place the set-up file on your desktop.

Close your Internet browser, and download manager and go to your desktop.

You should see 2 new icons on the desktop. Double-click the folder 'djvuplug_macosx6.x'.

You will see several files; double-click the file named 'djvu browser plugin.mpkg'.

Click the 'Continue' button.

Next is a notice about the compatibility and changes, click the 'Continue' button.

Next is the Licence Agreement. Click the 'Continue' button.

A new window will appear at the top of the installer. Click the 'Agree' button.

Once the download has completed, the computer should place the set-up file on your desktop.

Click the 'Macintosh Hard Drive' icon in the middle of the installer screen.

A green arrow should appear pointing towards the hard drive. Click the 'Continue' button.

On the next screen, click 'Install'.

The installation will now begin, and could take a couple of minutes. When it has finished, you should see the message 'software successfully installed'. When this message appears, click the 'close' button.

me again. first of all, 2 icons do not appear but they do download to applications. secondly, which of the 2 plugins do i need? But neither work. I accessed the blog as mentioned, and easily changed 64 to 32 bit. I use firefox mainly, but have safari also. look forward to your reply. helen

First, and most important, you are breaking the cardinal rule of safe computing: If a website prompts you to install software that comes from that same site, or an unknown site, as a condition of viewing the content, don't do it. If you ignore this rule, your computer will eventually be infected with malware. I don't say that this particular item is malware, but at the very least, the site operator is oblivious to security issues, and for that reason alone should not be trusted.

DjVu is an open format, though an obscure one. If the content of this particular website, purporting to be in that format, can't be viewed with software from another source, then it's defective. To me, it's suspicious that the site even has content in that format. Unless you're archiving terabytes of data, there's no good reason not to use PDF, which doesn't require the user to install any special software. I suggest you delete whatever files you downloaded from the site and never visit it again.
