iPhone 4s 3G data use when charging at night

My iPhone has been using 3G data excessively ever since the IOS 5.01 update.

AT&T has credited my account but don't know where the data usage is coming from.

All services have been disabled including iCloud, hotspot, location services, notification center, etc.

I have wifi at home. Last night I forgot to turnoff cellular data when I got home and plugged it in to charge.

This morning I received a data usage email alert from AT&T. I called immediately and went through the times the data usage peaked.

The largest was 475mb, yes mb at 12:55am while I was sleeping and the phone was charging. One other note the IPhone cellular data useage shows 1.7 gb sent and 63.7mb received since last reset which was November 24 or 10 days ago.

I used to use less than 200 mb in a month. I sure hope this gets fixed soon otherwise the 4s is just a nice camera phone.

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.0.1, Unexplained overnight data use age.

I read in the user manual, that every time the phone is connected to charger it "can" sync a back up to icloud and or wifi sync to your computer, so saying this, if you have icloud back up on it syncs once a day, plug in your charger, syncs again...so thats data usage twice. could explain that a little! but seeing that i dont back up to icloud and only sync to itunes, and have pretty much every notification and location services turned off, im also getting data usages aswell, but not that as high as that, i gues the more info you are syncing the more data + the "charges"

My daughter at 315pm yesterday used 826MB of data after school. Gimme a break, this is ridiculous. I've never used that much data and I've had a smart phone for over 4 years. I am a heavy user as well.

I had to get mad at 2 people, then 2nd tier support at ATT belived me that there was just no way 4 youtube videos could cause that much data. Took an hour of my life and I'm still fuming about it.

Sorry if off topic. just ranting.

I also had the problem but found a solution by "googling" the question. It makes total sense now.

If you are experiencing super high data usage on iOS5, just follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to: Settings -> iCloud -> Documents & Data -> Use Cellular
  2. Turn it OFF
  3. Fight with AT&T (or other wireless carrier) about your excessive data usage charges

A few weeks ago I gave the same advice to my wife to share with a friend. This does solve the problem of excessive 3G use but not the core issue. And the core issue is not AT&T or Verizon or any other phone carrier's issue. Although the phone carriers should all have seen and reported this and not just accepting it as a great boon in data usage changes for them. But Apple's response should also be at the top of the list of Google hits.

I was not involved in identifying the root cause of my friends problem, so I did not give it any more thought. Tonight I realized after fixing my router configuration that my network had been going up and down much more frequently than I had ever experienced in the past. So, I recommend having whoever set up your wireless router to review the forum discussions of IOS 4.3 and wireless router issues. These will probably give a technical person a clue as to what the settings should be to overcome the issue.

I assume there is a press release and apology out there on this issue from somebody but if not I am sure there will be. Best of luck.
