I restarted my Imac today and get the same error message:

Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”

Performing live verification.

Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.

Checking extents overflow file.

Checking catalog file.

Checking multi-linked files.

Checking catalog hierarchy.

Checking extended attributes file.

Checking volume bitmap.

Volume bitmap needs minor repair for under-allocation

Checking volume information.

The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.

Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

If your still on Snow Leopard as your profile indicates, drop in your Snow Leopard Disc, skip the installer, open Disk Utility from the menu bar and repair your Macintosh HD.

Disk repairs works but do you know what causes this to happen? This problem comes almost every week and getting more frequent. Last week my whole startup disk was corrupted. I had to format it three times to get my iMac to boot up again.

Hard to say, but at this point I'd make a good backup just to be safe.

Could be anything from early signs of Hard Disk failure, to bad third party software or worse AV software if you are running something like that?

Yes, I agree that it's a sign of HD failure. Except taking it to Apple store, it there any other option? Thanks.
