localhost: root startup

Hi. I hope someone can help me with a startup problem.

Just before Christmas, I helped a partner at my firm buy a new Powerbook G4 for his daughter. Sometime between then and now, the laptop has decided to boot to a command line interface reading:

localhost:/ root# [HCIController][start]
[AppleUSBHCIController][StopIsochPipeRead] - mInt1IsochInPipe = 0 - numReadsPending = 0
[start] 1

(The Apple logo is present on screen for a few seconds before the prompt appears.) To my knowledge, nothing untoward was installed in the mean time -- but my knowledge may be incomplete.

I've booted from the Install Disk and run the Disk Utilities repair, but the program found no errors to correct. I'm unsure how next to proceed.

Any advice would be appreciated.
