Error message "usb device not recognized"

When I connect my ipod nano 2nd generation to my new laptop -PC using Windows 7 I am getting the error message "USB device not recognized". I have tried rebooting the ipod, restarting the computer, tried all the usb ports, installed the latest itunes, etc. Can't do anything with the ipod at this point. Any advice?
