"Change disk" problems in TimeMachine

I'm hitting a problem I see reported elsewhere where the "Change disk" button in TimeMachine system preferences is not greyed out, but is inactive. This has occurred for me (after many years troublefree working) when disk-full struggles eventually prompted me to start over, reformating the same physical external firewire disk for use as a TimeMachine backup volume. Disk Utility reports no problems, correct Partition Map format (APM for a PowerPC iMac). I found and tried the bizarre disable BackToMyMac suggestion, repeatedly trashed TimeMachine and System Config system prefs + restarts with no joy. I know in Lion you can coerce some settings via Terminal using the new-to-Lion tmutil, but I'm not aware of any way of doing this in Leopard?

TIA

Safe Mode 1st of all attempts a Disk Directory repair, then clears several caches that may be corrupt, then disables several things that can interfere with settings/operations.

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when complete, test again.

Sorry for the delay - took a while to get an opportunity to test this but no, I'm afraid the problem persists despite a Safe Boot

A couple of further observations that might be a clue to someone?

1. I'm under the impression that when a new drive is mounted for the first time, TM should prompt user as to whether the volume should be used as a backup destination (and then writes a small file to the volume to mark that it shouldn't ask again). Despite re-partitioning the drive (which I thought would erase such a file) I don't get this pormpt

2. The change disk button does nothing whether TM is switched off or on in the System PrefPane (and whether or not I've just trashed the TM prefs file), but the first time you click the change disk button there is a slight "hesitation" (the button stays "pressed" for a moment or two before "popping back up" without anything happening, as if something's being checked or looked for) which doesn't occur on subsequent pressings. This order is unaffected by whether you click first with TM on or off

OK have Console Open in Applications>Utilities when you try it that first time & see if we get any clues, like maybe...

To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...

Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.

Does TM work in the new account?

Dec 7, 2011 9:32 AM in response to Pondini

Thanks BDAqua and Pondini

I had found your great site Pondini and tried the "Turn off Back to my Mac" trick before posting my initial query. I'm posting the Console output below (sorry, rather lengthy) from the following actions. (Starting with TM turned off in System Preferences and System Preferences quitted)

1. Launch DiskUtility and reformat the FireWire drive I want to use as TM destination

2. Trash TM prefs

3. Unmount the target volume and remount

4. Open TM system preferences and try to click Change Disk (TM still turned off)

5. Turn TM on and try clicking Change Disk again

The error message "*** -[NSCFString substringFromIndex:]: Range or index out of bounds" seems to result from the first attempt to Change Disk - the second click doesn't appear to generate anything.

Hoping this makes sense to someone, and thanks again guys...

That doesn't look good. I don't recall seeing that message anywhere -- it sounds like Safari is not compatible with Disk Utilty, which seems odd enough, much less why DU is trying to do anything with/to Safari.

What versions of those do you have? My G5 iMac running 10.5.8 has Safari 5.0.5 (5533.21.1) and Disk Utility 11.1 (252.4).

Something to do with SyncServices . . .

Now System Prefs is incompatible with Safari?

Have you had any other sorts of trouble? If so, what?

If you haven't, try verifying your internal HD, just to be sure the directories, etc., are ok.

If nobody else has a clue, considering the messages about Apple apps, it looks like your installation of OSX and/or those apps might be compromised. You might want to install the 10.5.8 "combo" update, per Installing the ''combo'' update and/or Reinstalling OSX. If that doesn't help, reinstalling OSX would be worth a try.

Dec 7, 2011 2:08 PM in response to Percussor

Could be many things, we should start with this...

"Try Disk Utility

1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.

2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)

*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*

3. Click the First Aid tab.

4. Select your Mac OS X volume.

5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.

(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

Reset Launch Services...

http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/resetlaunchservices.html#Anchor-Reset-47857

Reboot.

If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120

Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

Jan 23, 2012 1:04 PM in response to BDAqua

This has taken me a while, but eventually got round to a full archive and install (slightly complicated by having to reset passwords in single user mode as the passwords to the preserved user accounts somehow got lost in the process). Currently rolled back to 10.5.0 pending running the Combined Software Update back to 10.5.8 and - the Time Machine problem persists (and again, something that I also find puzzling and may be related, even when I reformat the external FireWire drive I want to use as the TM target) I'm not prompted whether I want to make this volume a TM target disk

The only clue in Console is the System Preferences[722]: *** -[NSCFString substringFromIndex:]: Range or index out of bounds message as before...

Any ideas what might be going on please?

Jan 23, 2012 1:34 PM in response to Percussor

With the Passwords missing after A&I & such, I think the Corruption is deeper than in the OS, A&I should correct that by replacing important OS components, so it's something that wasn't replaced.

Only way I can see out of this is to say do a Fresh Install, maybe on another drive, set up the Same users on it as the internal & in the same order, then see what important data we can transfer over.

Tough, it's possible doing the 10.5.8 Combo & all other updates might take care of this latest error.

Jan 24, 2012 12:39 AM in response to BDAqua

Hi BDAqua

My understanding is that lost passwords after an A & I of Leopard are a known and unrelated issue (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1543) an not an indication of a need for scorched-earth approaches :-) The solution posted there has fixed that particular problem.

I see no other signs of "deep down corruption" - all disk integrity checks etc are fine and every other aspect of operation is as expected. I'll run the 10.5.8 update tonight but am not optimistic this will address the cause!

@Pondini: did you ever get to the bottom of the cause why BackToMyMac can cause this problem? Is there a clue there? I've signed this machine out of what is anyway now a defunct MobileMe account (as it's a Leopard machine it can't access iCloud)

I don't think it was fixed in Leopard, but seems to be ok in Snow Leopard and Lion. I haven't seen a post about it in a long time.

However, if turning it off didn't help you, the problem must be elsewhere. As BDAqua says, there appear to be deeper problems on your system. 😟
