I've also experienced a lot of slow-downs in regular computer related activity. typing, copying and pasting, etc. this used to be a screming fast machine. Ihave tons of RAM and even a 500gb SSD. it was getting slow in Snow Leopard too which is why Idid a clean install of Lion. my Macbook pro is faster and it's almost as old as this.

could any of this be causing the slow downs?

Imean like little pauses in mouse movemoents and text input and clicking on things etc?

I think this comouter should be a lot faster than it is.

Hi Steve,

Could be many things, open Console in Applications Utilities & see if we have constant messages going by.

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...

PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive

Reboot, test again.

thanks for the tips

there are not constant messages in the console but there are a lot of them (4000 just today - is that normal?)

the most comon recurring messages are like this.

12/4/11 8:06:47.000 PM kernel: hfs: set hardlink bit on vol=BAY 2 boot drive cnid=27893 inoid=27865

only the numbers at the end change

and this one is very common:

12/4/11 3:20:35.259 PM [0x0-0x492492].com.microsoft.Excel: Dec 4 15:20:35 Steves-Mac-Pro.local Microsoft Excel[73515] <Error>: clip: empty path.

and this:

12/4/11 3:20:35.260 PM Microsoft Excel: clip: empty path.

try the safe boot and disk utility

thanks

Steve
