Hi,
How do I import into iTunes music that I already have on my computer.

first of all, do you have a mac or pc
Just drag and drop your music into iTunes.
Note not all format are supported.
MacBookPro, OSX 10.7.2.
The music i want to import is in a folder with the name of the artist. Inside this folder there are three folders with the names cd1, cd2 and covers. The music is in a mp3 format. The cover folder contains six jpg pictures.
1. Make sure in iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced tab > Keep iTunes Media folder organized and Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library are CHECKED.
2. iTunes > File > Library > Organize Library... > Consolidate files is CHECKED.
Drag the mp3 songs into iTunes.
Use iTunes Get Info to add album covers (Artwork), Artist, Genre etc...
ckuan,
Tasks one and two done. I may be not much of a music-man but when activating all the mp3 songs and dragging them to iTunes music library they do not seem to stick. Also no indication in the Date added column that the drag and drop has been successful.
Where do I go wrong?

When you drop, do you have iTunes > LIBRARY > Music (left panel) selected?
Just drag one song for testing see how it goes.
No effect. I drag the song to the music area. Underneath the song I see the green dot with a white cross in the middle. I drop the song, and nothing happens.

It might be that the songs in question are already in your library - or iTunes thinks they are. iTunes silently refuses to import duplicates and ignores the request. Search your iTunes Library if similar songs already exist.
I just had a similar problem - iTunes refusing to import a song. After I imported the song to Quicktime and exported the audio again, iTunes no longer recognized the song as duplicate and I could import the song by dragging it to the iTunes Library.
Dear ckuan and leonie,
I do apologise, and I am truly ashamed.
It turned out that all the mp3 files were 0 kb each. No wonder nothing happened. I am truly sorry for having taken up your time with this completely irrelevant matter.

No need to apologize, I hope you discover your original songs somewhere ...
No worries, at least we have consolidated iTunes files. 😉
Stay tuned, next potential problem coming up. See thread with the heading:
DO I HAVE THE SAMEMUSIC IN TWO PLACES
