Mac Mail doesn't recognize my account

I just recently converted to a .me mail address and wanted to add it to Mac Mail but it won't recognize my password I've tried several times to make sure I'm typing it correctly and still nothing. I get my mail on my phone and online but not through Mac Mail. Does anybody have a clue why? Maybe it's because I have OS 10.6.8 and not Lion??

i should mention that I am using iCloud

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

After upgrading to Lion to use software that required the waistful upgrade and ******* away $20. It now has created more complications and issues. MAC mail does not work! and that's just the beginning. I too have to use either my phone or Ipad or even more lame log into the internet to see my mail. Yet, they have no answers to fix this. If someone out there can give a legit answer to fix it that would be great.
