Is this possible? View photos in full screen and navigate using cursor

Recent convert from PC. Love the mac thus far but this is driving me crazy. What I am trying to do is to view pictures (in a folder) in full screen and be able to navigate either using the left-right cursor or some kind of buttons on the screen. Here's what I did:

1) Intuitively, I double clicked on one of pics. It brings up Preview. So far so good. Able to view full screen but wait! There's no way to go the the next or previous pics. Ok I get it Preview is supposed to 'simply preview' a doc/pic. It is not a full fledge image viewing application.

2) Few Googles later, I learned about quicklook. Easy enough, I pressed the spacebar and can see the pictures. Left-right cursor works! But wait! It stops when you view the last picture in the row (i.e. it doesn't go the next row). Huh?

3) Few Googles later. I learned about using the 'tab' instead. Very nice...I can now browse pics on the next rows...BUT...how do I go back?

4) Few Googles later. I learned about using the 'shift tab' to go back (now this is getting annoying). Fine, now that I've nailed navigation 101, how do I view the pics in full screen? Quicklook only utilize like 50% of the screen. I don't think it is possible....so back to square one.

5) More Googles later. I learned about "command a" to select all pictures and then "enter". This will open Preview with all the pictures and presto the left-right cursor works, a left-right icon appears and voila the "full screen" icon is available.

Can some expert/genius please tell me if I am too stupid to use a Mac or that Windows 7 is indeed a more superior os.

Then you need to start using photo management software, like iPhoto. The Finder is not, and should not be expected to be, a photo management tool, any more than Windows Explorer is.

Also, note that if you, as you say, figured all this out already and have just been leading me along, as I'm trying to help you, just to give you an increased opportunity to rant, that is not only not appreciated, it is against the terms of use of these forums.

Eww, thanks for the feedback but I don't prefer Windows. I am indifferent to either os and is trying out mac (probably bec of those I am pc I am mac commercials).

When you replied "you can do exactly what you wanted all along", are you saying that what I wrote (I know I am ranting) IS the WAY to do things on a mac?

It is akin to driving a civic all my life, upgraded to a bmw, found out that the left-right signal is flipped and told on a bmw forum that that's how they do things in germany and "to each his own".

Thomas, thanks for the link. It is very useful indeed. However, I did a quick glance but couldn't find any answer to my question. I understand that there is a learning curve for PC to Mac conversion and have absolutely no problem with that. I really want to learn the mac.

Thus far neither you nor Eww has answered my question. Can it be done? If I may ask, how do you browse through your photos in full screen mode?

I thought you had solved it. Your step 5 seems to indicate that you had. Certainly, it is possible to view the images in full screen mode in Preview and navigate between them with the arrow keys. However, if you're still looking for a way to do it without using Preview, use Quicklook: select all the photos you're interested in viewing, then hit the space bar, then click the full screen icon.

If photo management is a big deal for you, you should consider using iPhoto, which should have come with your Mac (preinstalled in the Applications folder).

Thomas, thanks. I just needed a yea or nay and you've confirmed it.

One last thing, you had mentioned "it is possible to view the images in full screen mode in Preview and navigate between them with the arrow keys". I don't think that is possible. Left right cursor works in Quicklook but not preview. With preview, you'll have to close the pic and open the next pic. No way to use cursor.

That is not what you described doing in step 5 of your original post, and there is no reason to expect that to work. You have only opened one single file in Preview, so there is no navigation to be done. If you select multiple image files and open them all at one time in Preview, as you described doing in step 5, then you can navigate between those images (and only those images) with the arrow keys.

Thomas thanks. I think we (mostly I) are beating on a dead horse here. I guess I had figured out the answer from the get-go but is simply ranting. Windows may be a crappy os but when it comes to picture viewing, it is more intuitive.

Now that I've figured out that the "solution" is to select all and then open in preview. Another question came up...what if I want to start viewing and navigating from the middle of the pack? Assuming I have a 100 pics, and I "open" pic 50. Using preview on a single pic wont' let me navigate as you had mentioned. Quicklook allows tab/shift tab but not full screen. The "select all then open in preview" won't cut it since it will start from pic 1. Selecting just pic 50 to 100 then preview works but won't allow you to view pic 49 and before.

fittan: In the Finder, select all the pictures you want to have access to. Open them in Preview. In the View menu, select Sidebar > Show Sidebar, then select Sidebar > Table of Contents. Click on the name of the picture in the sidebar list where you want to begin viewing. You are now able to use the arrow keys to move in either direction from that picture. The sidebar gives you immediate access to all of them, by filename or thumbnail image.

As Thomas suggests, it would be well worth your while to look at iPhoto — a tool for organizing, editing and filing your pictures, as well as viewing them flexibly. But like Preview, it doesn't work exactly the way anything in Windows has accustomed you to working, so you will need to learn it.

Thomas, yes I am partially ranting but I am also trying to learn what I am doing wrong. I simply don't believe how it is such a pain to view pics on a mac. I am not trying to do anything fancy....to reiterate I simply want to:

1) start viewing any picture in a folder

2) view it in full screen and

3) navigate back and forth (either using cursor or some kind of on screen buttons)

iPhoto wont do since I am trying to view and not edit photo.

There is a feature in iPhoto that will permit you to accomplish your desired task. Select your images and import the into iPhoto. This creates an EVENT. Click on the Event. This creates a panel showing the individual pictures. Click on any Picture, it will show that picture in large scale. Press OPTION/COMMAND and the 'F' key and you are in full screen. Press those arrow keys left and right to your hearts content. Oh, and the curser is there!

Ciao.
