running a dual G4 , connector to amp and speaker. Work fine, yesterday nothing
did nothing to the computer. But I have no digital out to select in output in the sound.
Also when I unplug the jack from the back of the computer my internal speaker is not very load,
volume up all the way.

Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.

Is this digital output or analog? You say digital but unless you have something working with the digital speaker socket in the back of the computer, or USB, it is analog.
What software are you using to produce this sound? You may have to adjust volume on both the application and on the computer.
It helps to provide as much information as possible with a question so we aren't guessing as to the setup. 🙂
You don't see this like the Mute box & volume?
Hmmm, to see if it's system wide or a user issue...
To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...
Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.
Does Sound or Midi have the same problem in the new account?
If not I suspect these files...

Well, if it's a SW problem & not HW or a flaky jack, then I wonder if this file is munged...
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist
Ok... somthing else is going on. That line is missing and every time I clink inside finder I get the spinning ball and have to force quit to relaunch finder.
Not good.

First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop for now...
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
Did all of that and all is the same.... pain in the...

Are you still having trouble in the finder?
How full is your hard drive?
Can you open Console in Utilities to see if we get any clues in the logs?
Did it work better while in safe Mode?
finder is back , 80g hd 60free, worked fine in safe mode.
I have been using it all day as it is a printer server for my large format printers. maybe 2 program other than osx installed on drive.
