Looking through the font is not the way to do that. Below is some info on how to input special stuff. If that does not do the trick, then just tell us what it is you can't seem to make and we can probably provide the instructions:

To generate default conjuncts, type the first character followed by the Halant (also called Virama) key, then the next character. To generate explicit half-forms for alternative conjuncts, or independent half-forms, type the character followed by the Halant key and the Nukta key. To generate an "eyelash RA," type RA plus Nukta plus Halant. To generate a Nukta consonant, type the character plus Nukta. To prevent conjuncts, type two Halants.

Note that the Halant/Virama key is the D key on Devanagari keyboards and the F key on Devanagari-QWERTY keyboards. The Nukta key is the ] key on Devanagari keyboards and the Shift-F key on Devanagari-QWERTY keyboards. RA is the J key on Devanagari keyboards and the R key on Devanagari-QWERTY keyboards.

To make special conjuncts used in Sanskrit, try selecting the font Devanagari MT in the Font Panel, going to Advanced (gear wheel) > Typography, and checking the box for Additional Conjuncts.

The character I am trying to create is in the "ktti" in "Shakti." The left half of it looks like double "ta" and the right half looks like "ka" (and of course the 'i' over the top. I found an example of it here

There are two fonts, Devanagari MT and Devanagari Sangam. You don't need to worry about them, they are used automatically when you select one of the Devanagari keyboards. You do that in system prefs/language & text/input sources. Also check the boxes for Show Input Menu in Menu Bar and for Keyboard Viewer. You select Devanagari in the "flag" menu at the top right and type away. Use Keyboard viewer to see which key does what.

There are a lot more characters in the font than are visibe on the Keyboard Viewer or on the Character Viewer, most of which I can create with key combinations using the Devanagari QWERTY layout, but there are some which appear in many written texts that I do not know how to make.

Is there a way to show a list of every character in the font and a way to input the ones that do not have obvious input methods?

As Rothrock mentioned, you should be able to get this by checking the box for "additional conjuncts" in the typography pane and typing k-f-t-i with the Qwerty layout. Available only in Devanagari MT I guess.

Well, I have gotten it to work in TextEdit. Thank you!!!

Now I just have to figure out how to do it in NeoOffice... No luck there so far. I tried copying the text from TextEdit into NeoOffice, but it is the same as typing it into NeoOffice. Without a way to turn on Additional Conjuncts it looks wrong.

I think that's not possible, the OpenOffice clones cannot use Apple's advance typographical features. Pages and Nisus Writer and TextEdit should all work, not sure about what else.

I've just installed OSX 10.7.2. On Devanagari-QWERTY I hit the the 'f' key when trying to form a conjunct, but continually only the virama sign shows up after the first sign and the conjunct isn't formed. Any advice ?

Make sure your font is set to either Devanagari MT or Devanagari Sangam.

Which app are you using? Does it happen when you type here in this forum? Try typing h - i - n - f - d - I

Does anyone know how to type a glyph in this Devanagari MT fonts that like the one's that are used for Vedic Sanskrit (not simply a conjunct consonant but a glyph that has no Unicode identification nor can be created out of two or more Unicode characters)?

Could you give us the detail of what character you are talking about? Perhaps post a screenshot along with the transliteration of the glyph?

Normally conjuncts do not have unicode numbers, they are all created via font technology, and getting alternative conjuncts to display for special purposes like sanskrit depends on the font and the app.

What app are you using? You can try going to Format > Fonts > Show Fonts, hit the gear wheel at the bottom left, select Typography, and check the boxes for additional conjuncts and character alternates

That is one of the conjunct variants in the Advance Typography setting.

Thanks very much, but I can't find anything called "Font Panel" anywhere. I have Lion. Does it come standard or do I have to download it?

I set the font to Devanagari MT or Devangari Sangam, then when I hit a key it immediately jumps to Ariel Unicode. This is on Open Office 3.
