Can I mirror my ipad to my computer with apple tv?

I am a teacher and I would like to mirror what I do on my ipad to my imac computer that is attached to a projector. That way I can walk the room with my ipad and what I do on that screen shows up on the projector screen. I hear that I might be able to do this with Apple TV using Air Play, is this correct? If so, what do I need to do to make that happen? I have an iPad 2 and have not yet purchased the Apple TV, I want to make sure it works before I spend the $99.00. I do have an older iMac computer that is attached to the projector. It is a Mac OS X version 10.4.11.

Welcome to the Apple Community.

Yes it works with the Apple TV, however you would need to ensure your projector works with HDMI and 720p. Additionally being in a classroom environment you would be best checking with your IT people to make sure that the network doesn't have any restrictions that might stop AirPlay working. i.e. the Apple TV doesn't work with enterprise networks.
