Feb 2, 2013 8:45 AM in response to Awesam8by ComputerFixer,Loose connector... If it does it again, I would take it to a genius bar to have all of the plugs and connectors reseated.

Feb 2, 2013 9:53 AM in response to Angus Davisby 1robertino,It's the fan that is stuck. A couple on knocks near the right corner by the speaker will get it started again. I had this problem and it drove me crazy.

Apr 19, 2013 7:23 AM in response to 1robertinoby macbook pro kbd,Thank you!!! This sound had gotten on my very last nerve. A single sharp tap with one finger in the area above and to the left of the Esc key stopped it. A real hard tap wasn't necessary.
Thanks again and again to all who suggested this. I'm typing in peace for the first time in weeks!

Apr 24, 2013 10:53 AM in response to Angus Davisby Gitche Manitou,Went to all the trouble to sign up just to say that's the simplest solution I've ever encounted to a computer problem - just a wee sharp tap with the finger

May 6, 2013 8:20 PM in response to Angus Davisby ItsDeCia,I'm not sure if this is the issue in your case, but I also have a MacBook Air SSD that I recently repaired myself because of a clicking issue. I took it to Apple 3 times and they weren't able to repair it. So I purchased a screwdriver online to open my notebook to see for myself what the technicians couldn't find. What I found was surprising to me, the noise actually came from the battery. I initially thought it was the unibody. What the noise turned out to be, was electrical tape that was peeling and was rubbing up against the inside of the computer. Every slight move would cause this to happen. If you ever have the opportunity to, check your battery to see if you have the same issue, or bring it to a genius bar and tell them what I said and see if they might be able to find anything. Best of luck!!

Mar 11, 2014 7:22 AM in response to Awesam8by oldseagull,Thanks to everyone who confirmed this "fix' - my 2010 Air has been making the same sounds for months - I just thought it was normal until I found this information. I tapped the left side of the case with my trusty wooden shop mallet, near Escape button, and the sound quit! Thank You!

Apr 13, 2014 3:15 PM in response to Angus Davisby ChrisGB1,Followed the advice to knock the machine. Gave it three sharp raps with my knuckles near the power input. Fan whirred into life briefly and the sound stopped. Brillant.
