Speech Recognition not working properly...

I started using Speech Recognition today, and I had it calibrated initially fine. But then it stopped listening to my commands and when I went to try and recalibrate again, it would not pick up any of my phrases (I was sitting there asking myself "What time is it?" for 10 minutes. I haven't been able to find a solution anywhere...my microphone is picking myself up, and it was working just fine earlier today. I'm in a quiet environment, and I'm speaking as clear as I usually do. Any fix?

make sure your mic isn't covered. restart your computer and try it again. make a new way for it to listen. Make it stop listening all the time. make a new voice prompt before it listens. turn off voice prompt for it to listen.

Play around with the settings until they work for you. It's finicky to say the least. Try talking clearly like a Newsreporter. 😝

I had to delete the com.apple.speech files in the "~/library/preferences", and start up speech recognition again. It worked after that.

I had the same issue again after trying to install a new voice and changing the name of the voice command in which I referenced speech recognition, so I'm not sure if it is a bug or not, but a warning to anyone who gets the same problem.

This solved it for me, also. I wanted to emphasize that you can use the Nuance non-built-in voices finally by choosing the voice under System Preferences->Dictation and speech, then deleting all speech files from ~/Library/Preferences. I also disabled Speech Recognition and re-enabled it, though perhaps that was unnecessary, and then everything worked. (Note: you may have to try speech recognition (say some commands) a few times before it will finally respond. I think it takes a couple passes to re-form the entries in the speech plists.)
