Powerbook G4 will not accept cd

When inserting a CD or DVD, the Powerbook will not take it in. Is this simply a dead drive or could there be another issue?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.8), PowerPC G4

If the drive makes spinning noises and ultimately ejects the disk, you could have a dirty drive. The slot-load drives on notebook computer tend to gather debris as we move them around. Get a drive cleaning disk. They are usually US$5-15 at any emporium that sells computer supplies.

A friend has an old MacBook Pro with the same drive arrangement as the PowerBook G4s. His drive would not write to disks and an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) pronounced the drive dead and the cost for parts and labor would be about US$140.

Short version: I loaned my friend my cleaning disk and his drive now works flawlessly

If nothing happens when you insert a disk--no regular noises, no mounting, nada-- them you probably need a new drive.
