I am trying to "hide" app icons on the iPad desktop by using folders to store several apps at once. I have read the manual and many discussions with instructions to drag one icon on top of another to automatically generate a folder. On my iPad 1, this doesn't work. They just keep sliding around into the new and empty spaces on the desktop. What am I missing? Do I need the latest iOS to accomplish this?

No, sometimes it is troublesome keep trying. Do it quickly and it should work ok.
What version of iOS do you have (Settings > General > About > Version) ? Folders require (I think) 4.2 +
If you have 4.2+ then are pressing and holding one until they start to shake, you should then be able to drag one until it is over another app and a folder should then be created.
Tap and hold down on an icon until it begins to "wiggle" on the screen.
Hold down on any wiggling icon and drag it onto another icon.
Let go of the icon.
Tap the home button and the apps will stop wiggling.
if Newsstand is one of them you're trying to hide, it won't work. At least not that easily. Newsstand resists being folderized. What you have to do with that one is have 3 icons. Use the other two to make the folder then slip newsstand in there quickly.
Sounds like I need to update the OS (darn thing has been in a drawer forever) and then give it a try. Of course, the battery has to charge first! Thanks, will report back.
And we have lift-off! Works great once iOS updated. As Skydiver noted, I can't make Newsstand move into a folder--but it's enough that the others I needed to move did as they were told đ. Thank you!
