New Macbook Pro w/iLife - No iDVD

Hi, I bought a Macbook Pro from the Apple Store, and it said that it would come with iLife '11. However, I am missing iDVD and iWeb. Is it just me that this has happened to, because I can't seem to find anything in the Apple support pages that can help me? 😕

iLife'11 on New Macs shipping with Lion contains iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand...

Software

  • OS X Lion (includes Mail, Address Book, iCal, the Mac App Store, iTunes, Safari, Time Machine, FaceTime, Photo Booth, Mission Control, Launchpad, AirDrop, Resume, Auto Save, Versions, Quick Look, Spotlight, QuickTime, and more)
  • iLife '11 (includes iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand)

If you want iDVD you can buy the Retail Disc or if you you desire a third Party software like Toast by Roxio...

As we now know iWeb, and iDVD, have been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.

It now appears that the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on. HOWEVER, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD. Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought.

Make a couple of phone calls.

iDVD is a “Must Have". (Yes, it should be included.)

Call Apple they will sent out iDVD at no charge.

If you are still within your 15 day return period, nicely explain that you may return the computer without iDVD. That usually does the trick.

Most people report that by asking here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/idvd.html

or here: http://www.apple.com/contact/

they got a free copy of iDVD.

If that doesn't work you can purchase iLife 11 (includes iDVD) on disk (don't get the download) for about $39.

I'm in the same situation. New iMac and shocked to see that they dropped iDVD. I'm still puzzled over how the powers that be think it's acceptable to ship movie editing software without any means to create DVDs to transfer your final products.

I called customer service and hit a brickwall. They will NOT ship out free discs of iDVD, even if you threaten to send the computer back. I had no other choice than to break down and purchase a copy of iLife 11. The next purchasing cycle I will seriously contemplate going with another platform (and that's coming from somebody who has purchased Apple products since the days of the Mac LCii).

Not cool Apple, not cool.

Hi, I had a similar problem when I bought my IMac a few weeks ago. I wanted to burn a slideshow from IPhoto to IDVD but there wasn't one bundled with these new Macs. I called Apple support, talked to an advisor explaining my problem, rescheduled a 'callback' at a convenient time (they pay the call charges), & talked to a senior advisor. After calmly describing the issue, I received a free copy of ILife 11 in the post. I know this has worked for others, it worked for me so give it a try. When you spend £1000+ on a computer it is frustrating that we have to go through all this just to burn a DVD. In the meantime you could try 'Burn', another free DVD program, it did the trick for me but do call Apple support, insist on speaking with a senior advisor using the callback option & I'm pretty sure your issue will be resolved.

I know people who still have video cassette players & it'll be a while before CD's & DVD's become obsolete, I feel your frustration, it feels like false marketing when IWeb & IDVD aren't bundled with the rest of the ILife 11 suite.

Give it a go & good luck!

Thanks to all, particularly Hikari88 & Ziatron. I called Support & told them the situation. They shipped me a copy of iLife'11 free of charge. When I went to install iDVD, it told me that I already had newer versions of GarageBand and iPhoto. iDVD installed without any problem, but it corrupted my current iPhoto. Since I had performed a Time Machine backup prior to installation, it was a simple matter of recovering iPhoto & reinstalling it. All seems to be working perfectly now. That saved me $30 from having to buy a copy of iLife to get what I should have already had.

Absolutely disgusting that iDVD is not included with iMovie. Trying to force people to NOT use DVDs when the computer was sold as a GREAT tool for making movies is making me ill. I have used iMovie with iDVD on other two Macs so this is completely misleading for a company that is making nice profits on sales. That is it, I am done with Apple.

Apple insists that the entire world has access to fast broadband and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that in reality not all users do, has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. That worked for some, but is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple. Also, you can complain bitterly here, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between using iCloud and burning DVDs:

http://www.apple.com/feedback/

Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that comes with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or will come with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD.

However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD. Also, of course, there is Roxio Toast.

And if you think Microsoft are any better, their new Windows 8 operating system will not play DVDs, or burn them, unless customers buy an extra upgrade, the company has announced.

In other words, computer manufacturers have declared optical media as dead, long before consumers are ready to stop using them, which is fine as long as they offered us a choice, but they won’t even do that.
