How to burn 6GB of data to a 4GB DVD??
I have a 6GB iPhoto library that I'd like to burn to a DVD and then remove that library from my HD.
How do I do that?
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), iPad 1 and iOS 5.0.1 iTunes 10.5

You can't.
You could use a dual layer DVD.
Allan
Grrr.... I don't have a dual layer burner or DVD. This is just for a backup so I can get the library off of the HD, making room for more. I all ready have several libraries for my iPhoto.
Maybe I have to go into iPhoto and subdivide the library, and then try and burn the 2 pieces to the DVD. I was hoping there was a way for the burning process to subdivide a large file for me.
Note that moving those photos to a DVD and removing them from the hard drive does NOT constitute a backup. That's just moving the photos from one relatively unstable medium to another, and you still only have one copy. If you're not backing up properly, that should become the first order of business, and you can worry about moving those photos later.
some applications will let you burn data on two different disks. it'll split up the content and then once you have the files in the same area together, they will form back to make your backed up file.... the application costs money of corse but I'm sure Toast Titanium Does this.
what you REALLY should do is get a thumb drive and back up your iphotos on that. This way you won't spend money on dvd's at 4gb incraments.
You could also get an external hard drive.
If you delete the stuff on your computer, you're not neccessarily backing it up. Backing up intails two copies of a file. The file itself as it was created initially. and the back up of the original on a different storage device for safe keeping.
you can also navigate to your iphoto library, right click, view contents, take 4gb worth of photos out of it and and burn those to a disk and then take the rest and burn those to a disk. there is no way of getting 6gb of data onto a 4gb disk though.
edit: Reed, you posted faster then me! I'm slow today I guess.
I guess what I really want is "dead storage" for some of these pictures, and make room on the HD for current pictures. I assumed DVD's was as good as it gets. Apparently not. I do have 2 outboard HD's, one for Time Machine leaving one 250gb one for something else.
Thanks to everyone for your help. Lots of good ideas.
Allan, Strictly speaking, your answer is correct. It can't be done. It is like 10lbs of stuff in a 5 lb sack. I was hoping there was an easy way to subdivide the library. Thanks for your help.
OS X always used to offer disc spanning when burning folders, and Toast can also easily do that if you want to buy a commercial app. With OS X, I've always just selected the folder to burn and it will automatically span discs - you'll want to select the option to not split files though.
Note, I mean burning folders from finder, not from iPhoto - so burning the whole encompassing folder for the iPhoto files you want to archive.
Of course, as mentioned, this means using more than one DVD, but other than some magical compression utility to shrink those image files, you are stuck with that.
