Thanks Jim. I realized shortly following my previous post. To speed up opening iBooks on my iPad 2 running iOS 5, I performed the following steps:

1 - Press and hold the iBooks icon until the desktop icons begin jiggling with the little 'X' in the upper left corner.

2 - Press the 'X' on the jiggling iBooks icon to uninstall iBooks, then pressed the home button.

3 - Not sure this step is necessary, but I held the power button until the power off slider appears, then fully powered down the iPad.

4 - After fully powering down the iPad, power it back up using the power button.

5 - Visit the App Store and reinstall iBooks (found it under 'purchased', though it's a free app). When found in the App Store, press 'Install' and accept the offer to sync your iBooks library.

6 - Resume using iBooks.

I found the above steps worked like a charm, permitting iBooks to open promptly along with my library, rather staring for 30-45 seconds at a blank bookcase awaiting the iPad to display the library or reopen the book being read.
