Can someone recommend a good multi-function scanner/printer/copier that works with Mac OS 10.6.8?

I've just purchased a Canon Image Class MF4570dn. Very disappointed to find that whatever I do I cannot get the scanner to work & the Apple support board is of no help.

It seems like there is a conflict with OS 10.6.8 that does not let the scanner get recognized by any scanning software -- either the Mac native software in Preview or the Canon software included on CD with the box & via download from Canon's site. The Canon software is called "MF Toolbox" but for the life of me I can't get it to start without instantly crashing!

Any suggestions of set-ups that are working with you on a similar system set-up would be much appreciated!

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

To sig: I did just install the latest Canon drivers. No improvement in the issue with scanning via a USB connection.

To eww: As I said in my initial note, I have installed "the Canon software included on CD with the box & via download from Canon's site."

More specifically I downloaded and installed the software available here:

It is the latest software drivers that don't seem to be functioning.

Anyone that can help with this specific problem it would be much appreciated!

Hi Sig, Thank you for your efforts. Indeed the scanner *does* show up in Image Capture but when I attempt to scan it gives me the below error message.

Even more frustrating it happens at a moment when the printer is clearly *not* in sleep mode -- after I've just used the device to Print & Copy!

Scanner reported an error

Cannot scan because of the following:

- Scan type set on the scanner is incorrect

- Scanner is busy

- Error occurred in the scanner

- Scanner is in Sleep mode

Check the scanner status and try again.

Scanner driver will be terminated.

Hi sig,

Your diligent presence on these support boards is much appreciated. But both of you seem to be missing the fundamental issue with this scanner which is that Canon's software MF Toolbox does *not* work on certain Mac systems as attested to by many users on htese threads.

This screen shot should show you the frustrating circumstance many of us find ourselves in.

Consider this a WARNING TO ALL MAC USERS TO AVOID THESE CANON SCANNERS until there are a number of affirmative reviews of these prodcuts in these support forums.

I had a Canon stand alone scanner from 2007 or so and I remember hating it because it had to have it's own special driver installed first before it would work. I had no trouble once the driver was installed.

But to answer your question, I have had no problems with my HP LaserJet Pro CM1415fnw Color MFP. The only drawback being the expensive cost of consumables for the color laser cartriges. Then again it is a color laser so the cartridges last a lot longer than the ink jet versions.

I think it is going for mid 300s to 400. I basically just plugged it in and let the Mac OS install the Apple drivers for it and have no issues Scanning or Printing. I don't use the Fax portion so I cannot comment on that.

I do not use the HP software at all on machine because I consider it bloatware. You can scan through the Print & Scan System Preference or you can use Apple's Image Capture - I have had no issues with either one.

In addition it is a wireless printer so that is kind of cool.

Just my two cents.

It seems you have a unit already, but if you toss it, my suggestion would be: If someone tries to sell you an HP unit, spit in their face and run to another store as fast as you can. We have two HP 8500's. It was a struggle to get the scan to network folder to work with Snow Leopard; It simply will not configure with Lion. As a result, you can not stand at the unit and simply scan to the computer. HP is no help. I can't speak to their support of HP in the recent past but in the old days they supported Apple well, with models designed and configured specifically for Mac's. But after this, I will probably never buy another HP product again.

This is discouraging! I ended up trying Canon because my Macbook Pro suddenly stopped recognizing my previous HP scanner -- a MF inkjet printer.

I have been looking at HP multi-function lasers in lieu of this faulty Canon I just returned.

I intend to be doing very simple things with whatever MF unti I end upw ith -- no printing or scanning over the network. I'm happy to connect it directly to my computer via USB. So I'm not sure I'd experience the problems you are having.

Maybe I should go w/ one of these Brother units? Is there anyone on this board that can attest to these machines working with MacBook Pros?

Hi purchased a Canon mFC8380CDW as well and was consistently getting the annoying error that you were experiencing.

Scanner reported an error

Cannot scan because of the following:

- Scan type set on the scanner is incorrect

- Scanner is busy

- Error occurred in the scanner

- Scanner is in Sleep mode

Check the scanner status and try again.

Scanner driver will be terminated.

When I used the scan utility form my computer to scan a document. I would get this error. I tried un-installing and re-installing as you have.

Then I remembered that in Lexmark large multi-funciton printers where multiple users can scan, the user has to tell the printer that he/she wants to scan from it. I figured that process may work in the case as well and it does.

So here's the solution:

1. Goto the Canon MF printer

2. Press the Scan menu button

3. Choose Remote scan

4. [optional may depend on model otherwise skip it] => select the computer you wish to scan to

5. Goto back to your computer

6. Open the Canon MF Toolbox application

7. Adjust the settings the way you wish, ie feeder, scan size, color and dpi

8. Press [Start]

I hope this helps 🙂
