Q: Headphone jack broken snapped inside ipad, iphone, ipod... socket

Dont Stick Glue!! I think thats dangerous... I say this because I found the easiest and simplest way to fix it!!!!

(Note: This is for those where only the metal bit is stuck inside, and no plastic covering the pit in the middle of the head)

My headphone jack's top bit broke off and got stuck inside the ipad socket (this can be any 3.5mm sockets) After searching the internet for over six weeks, 4 of which were when I was waiting for my 'drill bits' to arrive... i finally recieved them yesterday... got the tip from eHow to use one bit and push it towards the side and pull it out.. didnt work for me, its too weak to exert any proper pressure being 0.5mm think.. so here is what I did:

Cut the crap - straight to business:

I see no Risk here !

What you will need:

- Five 0.5mm drill bits (easily available from eBay, I got a pack of 10 for $3)

- nothing else!

How to do it:

- Place the swirly side of the drill bits inside the pit in headphone jack's head stuck inside your socket (in iPad, Pod, phone or whatever) (I mean in the dead centre of the think stuck inside your socket)

- Four will fit quite easily; put the fifth one in and you will feel resistance, push it in with whatever way you fancy, i just stroked it in with my car keys and all five fit easily in the headphone's pit

- Now you can feel the five drill bits are tightly holding together (and they are holding the jack's head tight )

- Push it out!! Can describe the feeling when I saw the head stuck on the drill bits after reading crazy solution on the internet for 6 weeks.. didnt wnat to risk with the glue option.

I have the drill bits with me now, not any use for me... if you are in Sydney, you can collect them from me...

BTW I tried searchingfor 0.5mm in Bunnings etc.... no luck... had to go eBay and took four weeks to arrive .

Good Luck..

Cant believe it was so simple....!!!

I got this idea from the last few posts. I used the ink cartridge inside the pen and used the hole at the bottom. As a grip I used the hard plastic on the outside that holds the ink cartridge. I pushed down until it was securely around the piece f the jack in pulled out and it took me .5 seconds to realize that it worked. I got a new set of headphones 1 hour after and everything works perfectly.

    Thanks Chema777..!!

It took me less than 20 secs to pull out the broken piece with a BIC pen. iPad back to normal sound output. For those who want to use drill bits and super glue, please do so at your own risk.

Awesome. Thanks.  Read your post.  Then it was like the movie - Signs, but with pens instead of glasses of water.  I have tons of old pens in a shoebox.  I got the shoebox out and tried pen after pen.  Then 6th one clicked and I pulled it out. I could not find the tip of the earphone jack. Then I saw it wedged in the pen tube. It was in there so tight that I had trouble getting it out - not that I really needed to.

The key is finding a pen tub whose outer diameter will fit in the earphone hole and whose inner diameter is just the right size to fit snugly over the broken earphone jack end.  If you have lots of old ink pens, you are sure to have one that fits.  Once you find the right one, it is a 3-second operation.

Hey there. I had the broken jack problem as well. I tried the super glue, no success. I luckily found a drill bit kit in my friends apartment, picked the smallest bit, and went to town on the protruding stuck jack. I drilled and drilled and drilled until it was deep enough for me to leverage the broken headphone piece out. It flew across the room. I took my pants off and danced in my underwear for a minute. Thanks for the ideas and help, previous posters.

I just freaked out when the tip of the headphone pin was lodged inside of my 15 inch MacBook Pro. After trying to pry it out with small rods and then use Krazy Glue with a cut-off Q-tip, I found the solution.

I applied Krazy Glue (Green label with red top) with the brush included in the bottle to the remaining part of the headphone pin. I then placed this into the headphone jack and applied pressure. After about fifteen seconds of pressure, I pulled the headphones out, and with a little force, retrieved the piece that was stuck. Whew!

Great...my daughter has got the headphones jack stuck in the headphone hole...and yes she used superglue before telling me what she had done...Grrrrr...tried the bic pen method...no go, debating weather to drill it out, I did take it to a local shop that fixes iPads...iPods etc and he reckons the screen will need to be taken off, with the added worry that if it cracks in the process I have to pay for a new one!!! ... I'm getting my drill out !!!

( a very slightly peed off mother !)

I got mine out in 5 minutes using tweezers and small bathroom scissors. It took some prying and lots of tries but I eventually pried it out!

A friend had his headphone jack break off inside an IPad. We looked up the bic pen method of removal and, yes that looked like it would work. Since we have access to some electrical tools he used a plastic pin insertion / extractor tool from AMP, I believe it is a little bigger than a D-Sub pin. The idea and size is approximately the same as a plastic bic pen end, but the plastic extractor tool end is slotted so it can expand to fit just around the broke end of the jack pin.

The key is to use a little bit of Gel type Super Glue so no drips will fall into the jack area. Using the gel Super Glue with the plastic allows it to "weld" to the plastic thereby creating a stronger grip. Once you carefully insert it into the slot and feel it just go over the end inside, let it set up for about 15 minutes and it should easily be pulled out. In this case it came out and is now fully functional.

I can't believe Apple stores should have a problem performing this minor and inexpensive "surgery" either!

My daughter broke off the headphone jack and about half of it remained in our ipad.  Just wanted to say that I used a tiny bit of superglue and inserted the broken headphone jack back in, waited about a minute and the quickly pulled the whole jack out!  I am shocked that it worked but thrilled!
