iTunes Not Recognizing Devices

After updating to latest iTunes version, none of my devices are recognized by my computer. Trying to download podcasts to my iPod Nano or iPhone, but they don't show up in iTunes. Devices also don't show connected. Any known problems with new iTunes?

Thanks Jim. The first thing I did was go to the Apple support site & found the link you cite for the Mac. Followed all those steps, including reinstalling latest iTunes, but still no connection to my devices. The computer is a year old MacBook Pro i5 running OS 10.7.2, with all software updated. First time I have had this problem but been a Mac user since '84.
