Hope there is someone who has suffered and solved this. When I make calls I cannot hear them with the phone to my ear (through what the user guide calls the receiver) but have to turn the speaker on. Not good!

I purchased an iPhone 4S (16 GB - White) about 3-4 weeks ago at Eatoncentre Store. I have started using my phone for 5 days. But I am experiencing problem with sound.
Whether I call somenone or someone calls me, it connects and call time on the screen displays counting but unfortunately I can't hear them through the receiver and can't be heard. It sounds like echoing. Neither do I hear the dialing tone nor the person's voice untill I press the speaker icon on the screen. Then I switch it to receiver and able to talk. And sometimes it automatically puts the call on speaker when I call.
Solved. Got on to Apple and they advised to back ALL up via iTunes and then to do a Restore. A bit scary but it worked and my phone is back to normal.Good luck - let us know if it works for you too.
I did a restore but still no dialing tone when I make a call. While you restore, it gives you 2-3 options as I remember. I restored it from previous back up. Should I chose "as a new phone"? If I do such, will I loose all the backup data?
My phone uses. GSM.
I cannot hear through the receiver but the sound will come out of the speaker
