How do I disable Mail?

Mail's been such a clunker I've moved over to Thunderbird.

However, Mail is still loading an email account, when I have deleted all the accounts and even the files in the Library/ Mail folder (and yes, I'd backed them up to external HD just in case).

I use POP and MobileMe, but it's the MMe that keeps 'returning'.

When you say "Mail is still loading," do you mean it is starting up when you log in? If so, there are two ways to stop that.

If Mail is still in your dock, right or control click on the icon and then uncheck Options/Open at Login. Then go ahead and remove the icon from the dock. (Options/Remove from Dock)

Or, go to System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items and remove Mail from the list if it is there.

Some programs with built-in email links to Mail may require setting changes in their preferences.

No you dont want to delete all the launchdaemons. But I would suggest PACESupport and anacron. I since it appears you have ClamnXSAve installed I am now suggesting you uninstall it for the moment as well. I just downloaded it and see it comes with an unsinstaller so use it rather than manually uninstalling. With the cron stuff, login items, and four items in ~/Library/LaunchAgents removed then all your user-specific additions that may be the cause are removed. See if the problem persists before moving on to the global stuff in /Library (i.e., previous plan until this cron stuff turned up).

Sigh 😟 Oh well.

I believe you said the problem doesn't occur when using another account. Just to cover all bases, and before tearing into the global stuff, try one more control experiment. Boot on safe mode and log into you normal account. Safe mode will suppress all the third party stuff as well as your account's login items and launchagents. I just want to see if the problem reproduces under those conditions. I'm expecting it won't.

I realize that this is an old thread, but I am experiencing the same problem. I have Lion and use gmail + chrome as my default email client, but Mail continually pops up, nagging me. I found this post just a minute ago, not sure if it works, but seems like it would.

TresRoque, if you figured out another solution let me know, I am interested.

Hi,

I'm having the same problem with Mail just opening up randomly. I don't have any mail accounts configured and it prompts me to set up a mail account. I'm assuming that some application is requesting to send mail via the Mail app but I can't figure out how to stop it from opening - it's very annoying.

I'm using Chrome & Google Apps mail.

This thread hasn't been touched since the beginning of June. What's the problem with someone tacking on to it now? I could see it being a problem when it was still active, but for all intents and purposes it's been dead and buried since December, 2011. You weren't seriously thinking you'd get answer after all this time, were you?

The added question might, if even in some roundabout way, help to get your original issue resolved.

That said, it may help the new poster to start a new topic to get more eyes on it.

Having same issues with Mail. It's an absolutely painful experience and has messed up the use of all my business email accounts (3 which are gmail hosted, and my hotmail). Ever since linking my accounts to Mail, my gmail accounts linked to outlook on my PC have stopped working properly.

I've tried diabling (ie removing and unchecking my email accounts in Mail) and still causing issues.
