I just restored from a Time Machine backup from a month ago.  Now I have songs in iTunes that are greyed out and that won't play.  Each song shows a greyed out "syncing" button to the left of the track name.  It's a static button that doesn't rotate to show syncing or anything.

These songs are on my iPhone and play fine there.  I already tried syncing the phone... doesn't help.  How in the world do I fix this?

Greyed out songs mean they can't be found on your hard drive.

Plug your iPhone back in and choose "Transfer Purchase from iPhone" and hopefully they will come back over.

    Thanks... however that didn't work.

I did figure out a fix...

    1) Deleted the greyed out songs (it didn't ask me to "Move to Trash - so like you said, the files weren't found)

    2) Logged into iTunes and clicked the "iTunes Store" link.

    3) In right hand column I clicked on "Purchased".

    4) Selected "Music" downloads and on right hand side selected, "Not in My Library".

    5) It allowed me to download them again!!

Thanks for this. I was having the same problem with a movie I'd purchased through my AppleTV but couldn't play in iTunes on my Mac.
