Try a Reset... I know you said the Home Button appears to be not working... but it's worth a try...

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Release the Buttons.

If no joy... Try a Restore...

1: Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.

2: If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane.

3: If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try using the steps in this article to force the device into recovery mode.

i had a similar problem with 5.0.0, after i restored it, it worked perfect. it seems, i have the problem nowagain with 5.0.1. i thought, it has something to do with the internet connnection - when there is much traffic, it responds bad, but that is not always the case. may be it causes the problem.

the problem didn't/doesn't exist every time, but the home button sometimes didn't/doesn't respond immidiately or just didn't/doesn't work.

i expect from an expensive product, like the ipad, that i don't have to restore it periodically (monthly). what can apple offer?

I appreciate that another post on this matter has suggested a Reset by means of the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons. However, if there is a suspected fault with either of these buttons you can circumvent this by going to Settings, General, Reset (scroll down for this) and then Reset All Settings. This does the same thing. Please note that this is NOT a Restore!

  1. Put the iPhone to sleep.
  2. Wait a couple of seconds.
  3. Press the Home button.
  4. iPhone should wake up.
  5. If iPhone does not wake up, then iPhone should be serviced.

If the phone does Wake Up and the Home Button appears to be Slow... See Here...

The Home button is slow to respond

  1. If the Home button is slow to respond when exiting one application, try another application.
  2. If the issue exists only in certain applications, try removing and reinstalling those applications. For further assistance in installing and troubleshooting applications see this article
  3. If the issue continues, turn iPhone off and back on.
  4. If the issue continues, reset iPhone. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds or until the Apple logo appears.
  5. Restore iPhone. Follow the steps the steps in the iPhone Troubleshooting Assistant.

Here is a fix that was recently shared on OSX Daily:

sometimes you can fix the response problem with the following sequence:

  • Open a default iOS application, such as Stocks, Calculator, or Weather
  • Press and hold down the Power button until the “Slide to Power Off” dialog appears, then release
  • Now press and hold the Home button until the “Slide to Power Off” screen disappears, force quitting the application

1. Plug-in your iPhone to its charger (I’ve not tested it by plugging in directly to a computer).

2. Long press Home button until the Voice Control screen comes up.

3. Unplug the cable immediately from your iPhone.

I’ve tested this on an iPhone 4 but not on other models. It seems to work, well, at least for me. If it doesn’t then most likely the home button circuitry or logic board is defective.

Well mine isnt responding either, ipad 1,just over 18 months old, tried reset, restore makes no difference, the only thing that did work was massage!! as has been suggested elsewhere to remedy the problem.Turn into landscape mode and massage the home button front and back, made it work a couple of times then nothing. I'm not best pleased with this performance, considering the price, defunct after 18months will do Apples reputation no good at all,not the only one to fail in this manner.

Clearly a design fault making it not fit for purpose.Awaiting call from Apple on Tuesday, see what they say/do.

you are wright, for that price, i expect a nearly perfect product, as it nearly always seems. i think apple has a reason to sell that: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC595LL/B

i took the ipad on a journey, restored it 2,5 days ago because the home button nearly didn't work at all and didn't get the delivery package from apple for the maintenance yet. it seems that the issue isn't existing.

i moved a symbol from the dock bar to the home screen, so i have 5 symbols in the dock bar, before that i had 6. 4 of them are stock apps, 1 of them is a downloaded app. before i moved it, they were 2 downloaded apps. maybe it has something to do with it, that the dock bar just can handle a couple of non stock apps in the dock bar. i will see ...

there were about 6 updates in the last days for apps, maybe it has something to do with that.
