Mainstage 2.2 - paid update?
So is the mainstage update really not available to users of the Logic boxed version? Seems silly to have to fork out $29 for bugfixes.

Because it is a feature release, not just a bugfix release.
Not much in the way of new features, I'd argue it's more of a 2.1.4. $29 is a nice price for the app, but not if they're going to charge for every .1 update.
But it has a bunch of new features, which makes it at least a 2.2, if not a 2.5. And complaining about $29 seems a "bit" cheap to me... You even get a multi-machine license for that price!
I love (sigh) the fact that the "feature"

is defined as a MIDI enhancement when in fact it's really a bug fix (reported often over the last two years) that made MainStage very difficult to use reliably with a large live rig.
I'm very torn as to whether to give MainStage another try. I don't really feel like paying $29 to get that bug fix (and who knows if the other glitches are fixed) particularly since the custom Max/MSP system I built to replace MainStage a few months ago has been working 100% flawlessly and in fact gives me way more capabilities than I got with MainStage.
MainStage however is still prettier!
