how to change start up items

Somehow, Skype has started launching upon the startup of my Mac Book Pro. I know I have to take skype out of the startup items folder. I always thought that I had to go into the Startup Items folder in the Library Folder of my user folder on the hard drive, but when I go to the Library Folder in the user folder, there is no startup items folder. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for the help.

This was exactly what I needed! Thanks so much! Has been driving me crazy trying to figure this out, and these instructions worked perfectly. I'm unsure though, how the items that where in that particular window, got there in the first place, as I'm sure I didn't add them to my startup?
