Is there a character limit for Verizon iPhone texting?

I just got an iPhone 4S and I know Verizon usually has a 160 character limit. On my old phone (enV3) it gave me a character count as I was typing my text but on the iPhone now it doesn't give me any count. Does the 160 character count still apply? If I go over the 160, will it automatically split up the texts? Basically, how does the verizon iPhone texting work? Thank you.

There is a 160 character limit for SMS no matter what system you are on. If you go over it will split the posts and the recipient will get it as two text messages.

Go to Settings > Messages to turn on character count. Scroll down and you will see it.

If you are messaging to someone with an iOS 5 device it will switch to iMessage if you have it on and the character limit does not apply. If you are using iMessage it will say so in the text box and the Send button will be blue.
