how do I open my photos that are on my back up hard drive ?

I ran out of space on my hard drive because of all of my pictures. I moved the old library to an external hard drive. When I open iphoto, how do I access the external hard drive to view those pictures? Thanks!

iPhoto '11, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

How did you move them? If you used Time Machine, those are backups and can't be used directly. You need to move them, per the link supplied by Rysz.
