clip from viewer can't be placed in timeline

I am unable to place a clip from viewer into timeline. If I try, I get a flashing grey square behind the curser. I can drop the same clip from Browser into timeline without any problem. Any thoughts on what the problem is please?

I have deleted p-list and restarted computer.
