Help With installing Mac OSX ?

Hey guys ...

my G4 eMac has a flashing question(?) mark.. so i tryed to reinstall mac osx and i did..

i place the install DVD in a NON-Mac DVD-RW Drive (Could this be the problem?) and i hold/press "C" and wait nothing happens.. just gose back to

the flashing question mark... but if you are going to tell me to do these..

1) Hold "OPTION" = Just a purple back ground with 2 Button "Refresh&Arrow'

2)Hold "C' = NOTHING HAPPENS

3) reset nvram = computer resets and gose back to the flashing ?

SO I have TRYED them ALL..

AND finaly i try OPEN FIRMWARE....

i try to boot the cd by typing ...

0 > boot cd:,\\tbxi Cant OPEN: cd:,\\tbxi.

and another way

0 > boot cd:9,\\:System\Library\CoreServices\BootX can't OPEN: cd:9\\:System\Library\CoreServices\BootX

Can't open device or file

and some thing else

( if you really need to know ask me..)

so from them above is there problem with the DVD-RW or something else

HELP ME PLEASE & THANK YOU

eMac-OTHER, Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier

It could be, not all external drive are bootable, is it Firewire or USB?

boot cd:,\\tbxi Cant OPEN: cd:,\\tbxi.

If you go into open firmware and type: devalias

What does that report?

"OPTION" = Just a purple back ground with 2 Button

That generally means the Hard Drive has died or is royally messed up.

Restart your computer, hold down Command-s and type in the following:

/sbin/fsck -fy Enter

/sbin/mount -uaw Enter

Any action at all?

Brand : LG CD-ROM ( and has apple logo on it)

2) Open firmware and type: devalias? = ( only some of the important ones are here).

*CD : /pci@2000000/mac-io@17/ata-3@20000/disk@0

*HD : /pci@2000000/mac-io@17/ata-3@20000/disk@0

*USB0 : /pic@f2000000/usb@18

*USB1 : /pic@f2000000/usb@19

Yeah, jumpers could be it.

I am also curious as to what version of Mac OS X you are trying to install, and what the specs are on the eMac. From your other post, it sounds like you might be using an intel only install, which won't work, or Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard which requires minimum specs that your eMac might not meet (but it should likely boot to some point).

Yes, 10.6.4 will not boot on your eMac. It will not install. It will not run.

You will need 10.4 or 10.5 (might work with even earlier versions depending on the model). If you do try 10.4 or 10.5, then you need to also make sure you meet the minimum requirements for RAM and CPU speed. 10.4 requires 256MB to run, and 10.5 requires 512MB and 867MHz or faster processor. The earlier eMacs were 700 and 800MHz, so won't run 10.5 without some jiggery pokery.

As for the jumpers, these are on the back of the DVD drive near the ATA cable. Changing these on the internal drive means taking apart the eMac.

Alternatively, you could install Mac OS X 10.4 or 10.5 on an external firewire drive, plug that into the eMac, and boot from it. This means you could install on a different Mac.

It's NOT a jumper wire, but a small, plastic block that acts is an isolator on certain pins located next to the long IDE connector. Is there a block there and is configured to cover certain pins?

There should be a diagram on the drive, somewhere, that shows where to put this plastic jumper block to cover certain pins that tell the computer that the drive is acting either as a master or slave drive.

If the block is missing, you'll need to find one, get one.
