Shuts Down Playing iTunes

Search did not turn up anything.

I have an Airport Express that I use to play tunes on my stereo. Open iTunes and set to shuffle play. After about 15-20 minutes iTunes stops playing and I have to open the screen, enter my password, and start playing the same or another tune. Sometimes the computer shuts down to a point that on opening the screen it reloads programs I'm not using, as if I have re-started the computer.

In System Preferences - Energy Saver I have "Put Hard Disk To Sleep When Possible", and "Computer Sleep" and "Display Sleep" set to less than 15 minutes. I would think that when playing iTunes and the keyboard is not touched to reset the sleep clock the Mac would still continue to play, even if it goes into sleep mode with the sceen dark. I can open my internet browser and leave it alone for what seems forever and the computer goes into sleep mode but does not shut down like when using iTunes.

Any help would be appreciated.

Looks like this problem has been around for a time.

Tried some different key words in Google and found this:

"Mac OS X: Why your Mac might not sleep or stay in sleep mode"

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1776

"There are reasons why you may want your Mac to stay awake even though you are not using the keyboard or mouse, such as when you are:

  • Watching a DVD movie
  • Listening to your iTunes music library
  • Running an automated backup
  • Away from your computer while downloading large files"

"Some things reset the sleep timers, preventing the computer from sleeping:

Hard drive access (even if you're not using the computer, a running application might be accessing your drive, such as when downloading a large file or listening to music in iTunes)"

Clearly my iTunes is not preventing the computer from entering sleep, if that's the problem. From the above statement it would seem that iTunes would automatically prevent sleep, yet that is not the case for me.

I don't think Apple should require that you go to Power Saving options before playing iTunes, it should be automatic that iTunes just stays playing, especially on AC power.

I can't believe there is not anybody out there that can't clarify this issue.

SOLVED!

Seems there are three options you need to change to avoid iTunes (or anything else) shutdown.

In Sysyem Preferences - Energy Saver

1. Set Computer Sleep to "Never".

2. Set Display Sleep to "Never".

In System Preferences - Security & Privacy - General

3. De-select "Log Out After xx minutes of inactivity".

The reason I found iTunes shut off at about an hour even after setting #1 & #2 above to Never was that #3 was set to 57 minutes.

A lot of work to play iTunes. It would be nice be able to select a "no shut off" option in iTunes.

"After about 15-20 minutes iTunes stops playing *and I have to open the screen*...."

"...*on opening the screen* it behaves..."

Call me crazy, but something about these words suggested to me that the screen was closed.

That huge chip on your shoulder is really getting in my way. Lots of luck to you.

Better previous helpful post would have been, "Is the display closed when this happens?" So let's start over.🙂

The lid is not closed, but the screen has gone black as in sleep mode. When password is entered to bring the screen back, for the most part the iTunes screen is showing, so all I have to do is click a tune to restart play, but randomly the iTunes app closes and I have to click on the app icon to bring iTunes back on screen, and when this happens other app screens are in the background under the iTunes screen as if the computer shut down then was restarted.

Macbook may not behave differently when in iTunes when going into sleep/shutdown mode when it does not detect keyboard/touchpad activity to reset sleep clock?? So this behavior may be "normal", but not desireable. I didn't know if anyone else out there has this situation and just solved it by disabling sleep/shutdown mode???

OK, so putting "computer sleep" and "display sleep" into "Never" does not work. I just had my iTunes playing to the Airport on my stero for about an hour, some time in that hour not only did iTunes shut down but my computer shut down and restarted so that my application windows were sitting on the desktop.

Something is definately wrong. Still looking for input out there.
