I don't remember what this thread has advised, and there are 5 pages I could review, so I just have two things for you to check on.

  1. Under Safari, Preferences, General, I have my "Remove Download list items: Manually"
    The Download button itself appears after you have downloaded something. On my Mac, it stays on my toolbar, I am thinking because I have items in there. If you clear the list from the button (when you click on it), it will have the button disappear.
  2. If you want to shorten the list, you have to Remove individual items. Click on an item (carefully?) and choose to Remove From List - you may also choose to open, show in Finder, or copy address.
    It seems I have to keep at least one item on the list or the button disappears until I download something new.

I'm running Sierra 10.12.6 and Safari 10.1.2 (and 11.0.1 on another mac)

Hope this helps. Post back if it does or doesn't. That helps!

Most likely problem is that the button disappears 'upon successful download' because your 'remove download list items' prefeference is set that way. See below.. and set 'remove download list items' preference to either 'when safari quits' (like you see beow) or 'manual.' Then the button will persist, and you can find the item easily until you quit safari .. or remove all items from the list manually .. depending on which of the two settings you choose.

I like the 'quit safari' option, because I don't have to do anything to keep the list small and usable; it is cleared out every time I quit safari. And the files themselves persist in my downloads folder if I need to go find them later.

I have two Macs. MacMini with SL 10.6.8 running Safari 5.1.2. I have the downloads button on my toolbar - I put it up there many Safari versions ago. That might explain it.

On my MacBook (which has a smaller screen - 13") I did not put the downloads button on my toolbar, because I was not downloading that much using the MacBook. Well, today I decided to add the downloads button on my MacBook, and I couldn't find it in the Customize Toolbar dialog. It's just not there.

Both machines are SL 10.6.8 running Safari 5.1.2. I'm betting that the only reason it shows up on my MacMini, is that I put it up there versions ago. I'm afraid to take it off!! I won't be able to add it back, I'll bet. Comparing the two Customize Toolbar dialogs, that appears to be the only missing button!

Has anyone figured out a way to get it back??

Is there a way to "copy" the toolbar settings from one Mac to another??

**Ah ha! I copied the "com.apple.Safari.plist" file from one machine to the other. It's there now on the toolbar, but not in either machines "Customize Toolbar" dialog box. So if you get it up there, don't take it off!!

Good news, sort of, when downloading something from Safari: first download it, and THEN you will see the download box icon on the toolbar. If you clear the download from the new box, the icon disappears from the Safari toolbar! It is retained in the Download Folder. Kinda weird.

So, download something and leave it in your list of downloads. That's the only way, it seems, to keep that toolbar icon visible in Safari. Got this advice from another thread.

Please confirm your com.apple.Safari.plist trick.

I have 10.7.3 on a MBP with Safari 5.1.7 with download button from years ago.

I have another mac 10.6.8 with Safari 5.1.7 fresh install.. no download button.

plist trick from the MBP to the 10.6.8 did nothing.

egkovach's advice also does nothing.

plist was from my user/library/preferences

ideas?

MacSter2008,

It might be because the com.apple.Safari.plist from you MBP is OS 10.7.3 (Lion). And you copied it to other Mac OS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). Just a guess. I wonder if Mountain Lion put back the download button. Anybody out there know and confirm this is available in Mountain Lion? Or maybe it's just a Safari thing.

I opened the plist file in TextEdit and I found a line I think is for the toolbar. DO NOT edit your plist in TextEdit!! I did not edit my file, I only opened it and looked at it and exited. If you edit it in TextEdit it will break!! I have read that you can edit it in a program called Text Wrangler - read about here: http://www.brighthub.com/computing/mac-platform/articles/40116.aspx

But, it's not something to do if you're not completely comfortable doing. Back up your file before you do it!! And, I'm not a Tech, just a User!!

I saw this in my Safari plist:

_MailPageToolbarIdentifier_ShowDownloadsToolbarIdentifier_TextSizingToolbarIdent ifier_

My Toolbar may be set up differently than yours. But I do have the Mail This Page button, then the Download Button, and then the Text Sizing Button. So it seems like this line might be the line that has my Download Button up on the Toolbar.

Use TextWrangler (I don't have it, so you're on your own.) and put the "_ShowDownloadsToolbarIdentifier_" part between two of your buttons. At least, that's what I would try.

Good Luck!!

In Safari 5.0.5 (Snow Leopard), the plist file shows these:

"NSToolbar Configuration BrowserWindowToolbarIdentifier" = {

"TB Display Mode" = 2;

"TB Icon Size Mode" = 1;

"TB Is Shown" = 1;

"TB Item Identifiers" = (

BackForwardToolbarIdentifier,

TextSizingToolbarIdentifier,

InputFieldsToolbarIdentifier,

ShowDownloadsWindowToolbarIdentifier,

ReportBugToolbarIdentifier

Getting that to work in Lion and later Safari variants might be an exercise in futility.😉

baltwo,

Curious, what program do you use to look at the plist file?

You are probably right, and like I said, I am not a tech. I just copied my safari plist file from one Mac to the other and they both are SL OS 10.6.8 and both running Safari 5.1.7. That's probably why copying from one to the other worked. And, I wasn't worried about losing any of my perferences on the Macbook.

Both my Macs have the download button on the toolbar - always. And, I have my General Settings set to Manually remove downloads. Even after I clear all downloads, the button stays on the toolbar. However, the Downloads button is not available in the Customize Toolbar dialog box.

baltwo - Off subject, just curious. In your tag-product line, it lists several OS versions. Do you have more than one machine, Or do you have Boot Camp options? Is that possible - to run 3 OS versions on same machine?

IT WORKS!

10.7.3 LION

5.1.7 SAFARI

ALl the newest stuff

<key>TB Item Identifiers</key>

<array>

<string>BackForwardToolbarIdentifier</string>

<string>InputFieldsToolbarIdentifier</string>

<string>ShowDownloadsToolbarIdentifier</string>

</array>

<key>TB Size Mode</key>

<integer>1</integer>

"ShowDownloadsToolbarIdentifier" needed to be added to the com.apple.Safari.plist file.

Quit Safari, modify plist file, relaunch Safari.

I used TextWrangler

I recommend adding the email button to your toolbar by way of "view->Customize toolbar..."

Then search for the "MailPageToolbarIdentifier" to locate where "ShowDownloadsToolbarIdentifier" needs to be.
