Does anybody know how to add the download button to safari toolbar?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

Click on view then select customize toolbar then select the icon with the arrow pointing down.

    The download 'button' -

    - should appear automatically immediately after you start downloading something, and should remain there until you clear its history via the 'clear' button in its dropmenu. You can click it during the download process in order to view the progress of the download in more detail.

I've looked at the various options there but the icon with the arrow pointing down is not there. Any ideas?

Here are the steps you've been given in picture form:

Do View menu > Customize ToolBar:

    Doing so brings up this:

Find the Downloads icon (in the second row in the image) and drag it to the toolbar.

Hello I have Safari 5.1.2 and the download icon does not exist in the toolbar items list. The only way I can view my downloads in progress and go to them is to open window/downloads. Am I missing something? thanks

AFAIK, that icon doesn't exist int Lion until you DL something. The loss of the DL window is disconcerting, since the window disappears whenever you click elsewhere. I suggest filing a bug report via http://www.apple.com/feedback/safari.html fior lost functionality, namely an independent window that shows DLs  no matter whet selected in Safari. Just another iOS dumbing down of Mac OS.

    still running 10.6.8

the DL window does not appear when DLing

I'd like to know this as well. I'm also on Safari 5.1.2 running on 10.6.8.

Here is a shot of my "Customize Toolbar" options dialog:

I also have this issue. The download button does not appear in the list. Does not appear while downloading either.

    On Snow Leopard 10.6.8.

    Any fixes?

FWIW, it exists in Safari 5.0.5, which I'm running on SL, since I don't have any iOS thingys and no use for cloudy stuff. You can reinstall that 10.6.8 v1.1 COMBO and regain Safari 5.0.5.

I have this problem, too! Why would they not give you that option?

  • drfrot Level 1 Level 1

Me too. I'm running 10.6.8 on two machines.

Safari 5.0.5 on MBA: everything working just fine

Safari 5.1.2 on iMac: no downloads window or button

Aaargh! Who could have POSSIBLY thought that was a good idea?!

Seriously. It's not a good move. If it's some kind of (yet another) subtle way to nudge SL users towards Lion, then I'm dissapointed in Apple. Just my thinkings.

I might just learn how to make Safari extensions, then make my own Downloads window button. Is it hard to make an extension like that? My programming experience stops at 10 Print "Hello World" -- 20 Goto 10

Most likely problem is that the button disappears 'upon successful download' because your 'remove download list items' prefeference is set that way.  See below.. and set 'remove download list items' preference to either 'when safari quits' (like you see beow) or 'manual.'  Then the button will persist, and you can find the item easily until you quit safari .. or remove all items from the list manually .. depending on which of the two settings you choose.

I like the 'quit safari' option, because I don't have to do anything to keep the list small and usable; it is cleared out every time I quit safari.  And the files themselves persist in my downloads folder if I need to go find them later.
