Photo albums inside photo albums

Hi

Over the years I have been creating an organised photo library on my PC. What I have is folders which have dates and names of occasions eg '2011-09-12 - Holiday 1'.

Some folders have folders within them ie if it was a two week holiday, pictures from each day are saved in their old sub folders. So using the same folder example as above I would have sub folders like '2011-09-12, '2011-09-13' etc.

This setup is ideal as each sub folder contains hundreds of pics so if they were in one master folder it would take ages to view or find pics. The above setup works well with my PC and other networked devices like my ps3 as they can see the main folders and allow you to also select sub folders. However Apple doesn't seem to like this!!

When I sync my iPhone 4 or iPad 2 to my PC it brings the top level folder/album name over but then throws every pic under this, so no sub folders/albums!! This then gives you the problem of having hundreds of pics to sift through.

Does anyone know if you can create sub folders/albums within folders/albums either on the devices, through iTunes or via another app?

Thanks for your input.

I love Apple products for their performance, simplicity and clean look but they bottle my mind with stupid little things like this. I keep a well organized filing structure and I hate how my albums with sub-folders get jumbled into one album. There's two solotions that I can think of. Take all your sub-folders out and make them primary folders. This wil obviously create a butt load of folders on your phone and disorganize your filing system on your PC. Or, you can have the best of both worlds. Jailbreak your devices! You'll have full control like on a PC. I can now access my files and create subfolders with ease! Just do your homework before attempting this feat and back everything up. After you free your device from it's confines you'll notice increase in battery life and greater performance!

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

I created sub folders as I like to keep things organised. Apple just dumping them all in a folder is a mess, especially when you have lots of pics in the folders like me.

So when you say you can create folders on the device is it done through an app/hack or is it done through windows or a windows program like funbox?

Thanks

You can do it in the Photos app itself. If you have iOS 5+ installed you should get an Edit button at the top of the album selection view in the app, and you can use that to create new albums and copy the photos that you have in the app into them - effectively you are creating pointers to those photos in the new albums, so if you delete the original photo from your iPad then all pointers to it will also be removed.

And I wouldn't jailbreak your device - you'll void your warranty, open up the device to malware and performance problems, and you will not be able to get any support from Apple (including using these forums).
