Q: ATI Radeon 2600 XT on Mac Pro 2008 has died

Hi All,

I have recently been having issues with one of my ATI Radeon 2600 XT Graphics cards - choppy graphics, artefacts appearing on the display and endless crashes of the OS.

I have read online about a recall program Apple did run which recalled these exact graphics cards, and after checking the serial number of the card in question, it does indeed match one of the 'bad' batch.

The only problem is - the program ended in July 2011

What are the chances Apple would be kind enough to still swap my card for a new unaffected one?

Thanks

Mac Pro (early 2008)

2 x 23" Cinema HD Monitors

You still have nothing to loose by asking!

You can put in a ATI Radeon HD 5770 or even the 5780.

I'm in the same boat.  :\  Mine just died too, would I need to take my tower to an Apple Store?  Or how would I go about asking Apple to replace my graphics card?

Also, if I were to put in a different graphics card (say the ATI Radeon HD 5770), how difficult is it to replace?  Would my Mac Pro (Early 2008) be able to handle it?  I have 2x2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (8-core) processor, the ATI Radeon HD 5770 says it requires Mac Pro (Mid 2010) with PCI Express 2.0 slot and OS X 10.6.4, whereas I'm still on just 10.5 Leopard and have an Early 2008 model...

On another thread, here, The Hatter, said something about baking the card in the oven?  Would that work if Apple won't replace it for free?

I have never opened up my tower before (I don't know how!) and I have been wanting to upgrade my RAM as well.  I have 4x1GB cards and I wanted to move up to like 8 or 16GB.  I was thinking about buying RAM from NewEgg or Amazon, whichever is cheaper, any suggestions?

Thank you for any help and sorry about hijacking the thread!   >~<  Should I make my own thread or continue in this one?  I'm sorry, I just don't want to cause any problems...I will make a new one if need be.

Okay, so I have had the same problem with my Radeon 2600 XT. I can vouch for the baking it in the oven moth. Anyway, the card came pre-installed in my 2008 (MacPro 3,1). It kept showing transparent pink/green checkerboard pattern, then eventually wouldn't even load into OS X. It would hang at the blue screen(s). Pop it into the oven on 400 degrees, Farenheit, and let it sit in there on a tray, for about 3 or 4 minutes tops. I pulled it back out, very skeptical of it working, and IT WORKED. I have now been using it for a day without any problems. This will only tide you until you can save up for another card, but I wanted to add to the record, that oven-baking a card DOES work. I hope it works for you!

My card in my 2008 8 core crapped out last week (two months after Apple Care expired).. Took it to the Apple Store.  I was calm and nice.. They checked it, verified it was bad.  Came back two days later, and they had put a replacement 2600 XT in it for me.  No Charge.  Yay.

When I had called the Apple Care Support line, they said that only *certain* Apple Stores would be willing to replace the card for free if your Apple Care had recently expired.  It was all up to the manager/owner of the Apple Store.

I was not so fortunate and I had to pay for a new card, which I upgraded to the better one, the ATI Radeon HD 5770 and I got it installed at my local MicroCenter/Authorized Apple Retailer.

Even though I upgraded to the better card, sometimes when I wake it up from Sleep, my screen stays blue a little longer than is comfortable for me and it makes me panic that something is still wrong....

Does anyone know why it would do this if the card is brand new?  I did upgrade to Snow Leopard since there was some complications using  Leopard with the ATI Radeon HD 5770.

I have a 2008 model with the 5770 installed, and have no problems at all waking from sleep.

As of September 2012, Apple is still honoring this program, the local Apple Store replaced my bad 2600XT card at no cost to me this past weekend ... not bad for a 4 year old Mac Pro out of warranty and out of AppleCare. It had occasional grey screens, then all black all the time, now it works fine with the new card.

Look for document TS3630 to confirm your card is among those covered.

Lee Warren 500, you were lucky!  I had the documentation and the card's serial number showing it was one of the cards affected and the manager at my Apple Store would not honor the recall, so I had to buy a new one...

I wold like to buy and upgrade a used Mac Pro so it has two ATI 2600XT's in the end.

I will get the cards used on eBay. After reading about problems with this card my most important question is:

Where can i find a complete list with the card numbers witch got recalled?

i Have found this info ->

"The broken cards have serial numbers which contain the following last four digits (* denotes any character):

    YPU(*), YPV(*), 1M4(*), 1M5(*), 29H(*), or 29G(*)"

Is that a complete list of devices or has anyone seen more accurate info out there?

Next question would be (as probably some of you have tryed this before):

Is it possible to put two cards in and using 4 Monitors on DVI outputs?

    and last:

Are these cards connectable to SLI mode? (i saw that they have connectors for it on the upper side as usual)

Thank everybody for help already and if anyone has some god advice i would appreciate it very much.

I had one in my 2008 3,1 8 core.  When it died a few months ago, the Apple Store here in Seattle put a brand new one in for me (no charge!!).  I recently upgraded to a ATI 5770.   Let me know if you're interested in my 2600XT (256).
