In this case the iMovie user went through the project and created it brand new from scratch. That solved it for that one project. So I think it might be a corrupted bit of media in the project causing the failure. It could be an animated title, a transition, possible even a picture or sound clip that's causing the failure to export. You might try creating a Duplicate Project and deleting suspicious items from that duplicate and tyring to export it again. If it's a short project and not very complex you might be able to pin down the corrupted item very quickly.
