Q: Copying to a USB

I wish to ocpy my music onto a USB memmory stick, It repeatedly tells me there isn't enough memory but it is 4Mb memory stick and it is empty. Do I need to reformat it?  The tracks I wish to copy are tracks I have put into iTunes from my CD collection.

Empty the Trash. If that doesn't work and you don't need anything currently on it, reformat it.

    Thanks for your suggestions Niel

Yes I had emptied the trash and I used Disk utility to reformst the USB. I assume erase and is what you mean by 'reformat'. None of these procedures have helped so far. BTW my USB memory stick is 8Gb and I cant even copy one track let alone a playlist.

Hi Niel  I am still trying to resolve this issue. Can you please tell me what it means to reformat the USB. I would appreciate your assistance as I have tried most options that I know.  Graham

Further to my last. When I attempt to drag music files to my USB I get

The item “05 05 Every Captive Free (Live).m4a” can’t be copied because there isn’t enough free space.

Yet I do not have any files on the USB. The Get Info says I have

14,336 bytes (14 KB on disk)

    Format MS-DOS (FAT12)'

    Capacity 4.1 MB

    Available 4.1 MB

Maybe this might help pinpointing the issue for me.

    Yes, erase.

If you are only uing this with a Mac, format it to Mac Extended.  If using this with a Windows machine too, format to FAT.*

What does Disk Utility currently say about the format of the drive?

*I've seen a couple of posts recently in the Lion forum on issues with FAT formatted USB drives that I haven't seen in other system forums.

Since it is formatted FAT12, max size will be 16 megabytes, you won't get a even single song onto it.

If this is to be used with your Mac only, open Applications > Utilities - Disk Utility, sselect the USB stick and format it as HFS+.

4MB! I didn't even catch that, or assumed it was 4GB.  Did they even make USB flash drives that small?  I know we have one around somewhere that is 32MB, but I thought that was a Model A.

You'll be lucky to fit even one song on a 4MB flash drive.  It depends upon the track duration and the format file used.

Graham did write it is an 8GB drive but formatting it t FAT12, the max size it will show as is 32MB, depending on how it was formatted but 4MB is typical (as used for a 3.5" disk). Don't know how it would have even gotten formatted FAT12.

Thanks for your comments and advice.

With disk utility there is only two options to reformat ExFAT and MS-DOS (FAT)

I have tried both formats on my 8GB Toshiba DVR Media USB but it still says not enough memory even for one track.

I have had many tracks previously on the USB but I don't know what happened when I reformatted to reuse it.

Eventhough the USB Flash Drive says it has 8GB capacity. The info at the bottom of Disk Utility says:

      Mount Point :          /Volumes/GRAHAMS  Capacity : 4.2 MB (4,161,024 Bytes)

      Format : MS-DOS (FAT12)  Available : 4.1 MB (4,117,504 Bytes)

Owners Enabled : No  Used : 14 KB (14,336 Bytes)

Number of Folders : 0  Number of Files : 512

    Maybe this might help

You don't see this (or similar)? Only ExFAT & MS-DOS show up?

Only the last two options appear on the pull down menu.
