MDS

Hi

Have just turned on my MBA (2008 Lion 10.7.2) and my CPU usage is maxing out. It seems that MDS, MDWorker and InterCheck are taking all of the recourse.

Have never has this before. Nothing changed. Only other activity today was a visit to ge nius Bar where they ran diagnostics on battery ( cant think that has anything to do withit)

Anyone any ideas - thanks

I have removed Sophos and the problem still remains, apart from that there in no InterCheck processes being shown - its now all MD worker at > 85% on both cores continiously.

As an aside why is Sophos considered useless?

I do have a Time Machine 2TB unit. However Time machine on the MBA is switched off (I only switch it on to do manual backups).

We're now using Sophos company wide for all our Mac's and PC's - the PC's seem to generally be OK but on every single mac (all 10.6.8); Sophos causes MDS to ramp up to 99% CPU usage...

Been speaking to Sophos about it and they've suggested contacting Apple about it... erm.

anyone delved deep enough to know if Sophos leaves any flags or similar in the Spotlight cache which will cause MDS to throw a hissy fit?

once installed, a complete purge of spotlight or a rebuild seem to be the only way to fix spotlight... (providing Sophos isnt installed again)

anyone else able to throw light on it?

For all of you concerned as to why MDS increases CPU cycles and makes the computer system fans go crazy, it has nothing to do with rebooting your computer, nor does it have any thing to do with Sophos. You can get the full story right here:

In short, it's all about OS-X's spotlight and indexing, etc. Read more at the link if interested.
