MacBook Pro does not restart or shutdown

My MacBook Pro purchased new in Mar 2010 does not shutdown or restart when I command it from the Apple logo. It seems like the Finder bar and the Dock get shutdown but the wallpaper just stays there. I left it for an hour and no change. I currently use Snow Leopard 10.6.8 In order for me to turn it off, I have to hold down on the power button. This isn't cool. Startup takes roughly 4 minutes from on button to usability. Any help?

Things you can try.

1. run Disk Utility to repair/verify your drive.

2. smc and pram reset.

3. try booting into another account.

4. try booting in safe mode, see how it behaves, then reboot.

Verified the disk and it was fine then did the pre-SMC fix where you restart and shutdown and it worked as normal. Go figure. Thanks for the help. If I have the same problem down the road, I'll revisit this post.
