Changing admin password when old password not known

Unable to change an admin password using a Snow Leopard system disc. I know not to actually install the system software but instead navigate to the Change Password under the Utilities menu. Nevertheless, I always get the request to enter the unknown password. This procedure is well known to me and I am puzzled with this current outcome. Any help to help me overcome my 'duh' moment will be appreciated.

I know you may have done a lot of this already but I would try walking step by step through this procedure again, especially the section marked Resetting the Original Administrator Account Password.

It also states when you are done with those steps you need to reset your Keychain password, so perhaps that is where it is hanging. After you have finished with the steps in the first article then go to:

Good luck. I know it can be frustrating.
