Flagged gmail emails not syncing

Flagged emails in my iPhone 4s mail app are not synced as starred emails on gmail exchange account. Does that mean flagged (mail.app) DOES NOT EQUAL starred emails in gmail?

Or is my mail app failing to sync with gmail?

MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.7), Thunderbolt-2-HDMI
