Safari opens to a blank page instead of my homepage

Maybe it's staring me in the face in preferences and I still just don't see it...

I've always had Safari open to my designated home page (Google search), but a few months ago, suddenly it opens to a blank page and the address bar has no address in it. So I have to click on a bookmark to get to Google.

I had changed nothing that I could recall that could have caused this sudden unwanted behavior.

I tried trashing preferences, didn't work.

Then a newer version of Safari came out, so I upgraded to the latest and it still does it.

Any clues would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Carolyn, you win an easy 10 points! But please know this: I previously trashed preference files until I was blue in the face, not only the main one but every one that I thought might be remotely related. None of it worked. So why did it work this time? My only explanation is that since I first dealt with this problem, a new version of Safari became available. Somehow, deleting preferences didn't work for this problem under the old one, but worked under the new one? Who knows?

I did try trashing the Cache.db (first) as you suggested, and that didn't fix it. Frankly it was more on a whim that I tried trashing the preference file one more time, before replying to you... and what a shock that it worked this time.

Thanks for helping to make it happen!

Are you referring to the .plist file?

If not, go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.

Quit then relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, move the .plist file to the Trash.

And try this...

Go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari

Move the Cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash.

Restart your Mac. Try Safari.

~ (Tilde) character represents the Home folder.
