I switched from hotmail to gmail (for obvious reasons) and while I am able to view all of my gmail folders in the mail app on my iphone 4, I can only see the two folders that I created on the gmail server on the mail app on my macbook pro (ie I cannot see the "Important" folder, the "Starred" folder, etc). is there a way around this? thanks so much!

In the mail sidebar, you should have a gmail folder at the bottom of the window. Those folders should be there. The folders that are synced (messages stored on the server) will appear in the mailboxes they are used for such as the inbox, sent, trash, etc.
If you aren't seeing them, try syncronizing the accounts.

Go the the GMail site and access the settings. Under Labels, check the boxes to show in IMAP the folders you want to see. Then they should appear in the Mail application.
I've done this and it's still not showing on my mac.
I see the gmail folder at the bottom. It has a number next to it, which increases as I get mail. When I click on this folder, it just says "No messages selected". No folders.
So, you're saying there is no triangle on the side of the gmail folder to open the enclosing folders?

Sometimes we get so caught up looking for a complicated answer we just can't see what's right in front of us. Happens to me often.
