a user password or an administrator passoword?

To reset a user password:

  1. Log in with an administrator account.
  2. From the Apple menu choose System Preferences.
  3. From the View menu choose Accounts.
  4. Click the lock button if it appears locked; enter the administrator password.
  5. Select the username whose password you want to change.
  6. Click the Reset Password button (Mac OS X v10.3 and v10.4) or the Change Password button (Mac OS X v10.5 or later).
  7. Enter a new password in both the Password and Verify fields, and add a hint if desired.
  8. Click the Reset Password button (Mac OS X v10.3 and v10.4) or the Change Password button (Mac OS X v10.5 or later).
  9. If a dialog box appears with the message "Your Keychain password will be changed to your new account password," click OK.

To reset an administrator password without a disc:

You can try this:

But, it will create a new account and your old files will still not be accessible.

Creating a new Admin on Mac Os X:

Here's how to reset your OS X password without an OS X CD.

the Working solution for me was to create a new admin

you can create new admin like this by deleting a specific file.

You need to enter terminal and create a new admin account:

1. Reboot

2. Hold apple key + s key down after you hear the chime. (command + s on newer Macs)

3. When you get text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):

mount -uw /

rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone

shutdown -h now

4. After rebooting you should have a brand new admin account. When you login as the new admin you can simply delete the old one and your good to go again!

If the OP follows this advice all of his data will be deleted!

Try this,

4. After rebooting you should have a brand new admin account. When you login as the new admin you can simply go to users and groups (Apple>System Preferences>Users and Groups). Change or delete the password on the old account, then login to the old account and (if you want to), delete the NEW account.
