itunes 10.5.2 update stalls when updating library

Hello,

I downloaded the latest iTunes update from software update and it downloaded fine. When I opened iTunes, it started updating library and the progress bar got half-way done and then stopped. I waited for about 20min, but it was still at the same position.

Here are the trouble shooting steps I took:

I forced quit iTunes. I removed the iTunes Library.itl file. I relaunched iTunes and iTunes 10.5.2 opened, but with no play lists etc. I deleted the newly created .itl file and put the old one back. I restored this file from a Time Machine back up from about 24hours previously. I opened iTunes again, and the same thing happened.

I downloaded the stand alone update and redid the same steps as before, but the update of the library just stalls. I even tried to use the .itl file located in the previous library folder, but the update of the library stalled just like before.

Time Machine will not let me restore a previous version of iTunes, nor will the finder let me delete iTunes as "Mac Os requires iTunes" or something of the sort.

I have the same problem on my MBP as well as my Mac Mini server. Althougth the content is not the same on both computers, the mac mini library started out as a copy of the one on my MBP. Both itunes libraries were working last night before the update.

Has anyone had this problem? iTunes was working fine before the update and I have not subscribed to iTunes Match.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Same problem here on my MacBook Pro and iMac. Both are running Lion, but have different iTunes libraries. I don't believe the issue is related to the size of the library (as suggested in another post) because my MacBook Pro library is very small (virtually no content). I also am not yet an iTunes Match subscriber. I'll continue to troubleshoot and post back any findings.

I've the same updating iTunes library issue on my Lion MBP. It hangs around the 70% mark.

But the moment I restart iTunes, the updating process starts again. I left it running overnight but no change to things in the morning. I've only a small library of 2,000 songs. It's definitely not a size issue as I know there are those between 10,000-20,000 songs.

Any solution would be much appreciated.

I'm using a Windows 7 PC and just install iTunes 10.5.2 only to find out that it has caused iTunes to stop working. I started out with the problem all of you are having "iTunes hanging on the updating media library problem", so I decided to start over. I opened itunes holding down "shift" and selected to create a new library. It creates the library, but then hangs and does nothing. the only thing I can do to close itunes is end the itunes32.exe process. This *****! I hate it when updates become downgrades. Apple please fix this ASAP!

I am having the same issue of iTunes freezing when it opens as the "Updating iTunes Library" comes up as soon as it launches and then reaches halfway and locks up on my Windows Vista machine. I have to close it in task manager. But then iTunes will begin a cycle of starting itself up over and over again as i I was clicking to start the program, and each time it does the same cycle of update windows library window popping up, freezing halfway though and then having to be closed out with task manager. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it and nada. I have no clue what is causing this other than something in the update.

I found a solution that worked for me. Here is what I did and where I found it.

"Looks like I tracked down the problem, it worked for me so I hope this works for everyone else experiencing problems. Go to your Task Manager and locate the program APSDaemon.exe (Apple Push)..... if you see this executing terminate the program and then startup iTunes and it should come up fine. You will see afterwards that APSDaemon.exe (Apple Push) starts back up but this is fine as long as iTunes has already started.

I tried playing both music and syncing up my iPhone with no problems. Note if you shutdown iTunes again you will have to terminate the process APSDaemon.exe (Apple Push) again. Haven't had time to see what in the world Apple Push is but this appears to have corrected the problem so that you can at least use iTunes and sync any device that needs to be synced.

Hope that helps everyone!"

Thanks to Moto-110 as this is at least a temporary work-around.

I tried signing out of my iTunes account on Windows XP - again iTunes froze. I then used the Task Manager's Processes tab to force APSDaemon.exe to end as Moto-110 suggested and iTunes unFroze.

Let's hope that the Apple Tech support staff now have enough information to put a permanent fix in place (soon).

I am also having the same trouble, iTunes just hangs when 'Updating Library". The bar doesnt even start to turn blue. I have tried Force Quit and reboot several times with no change. This time, i will let it hang for a couple of hours and see what happens. FYI it is not a total system freeze, I can still use my Mac for everything else. Ill post outcome.

I finally trashed the itunes app (I am fortunate enough to have not upgraded to Lion), and reinstalled old one that I downloaded here:

http://iphonerock.com/free-software/apple-itunes/download-itunes-10-5-1-beta-3-m ac-windows-direct-link.html,

and I can finally sync iphone, use itunes, etc.

There are varying degrees of freezing, sometimes I can switch windows, last time it spun the beach ball, and activity monitor showed 27% of cpu being used by itunes, but I could not comlete any tasks in any other applications.
