Macbook Pro's display have vertical lines

My 2008 Macbook Pro's display suddenly have vertical lines and the display changes colors every time the mac either wakes or boots. This started just a few days ago. At first the display goes back to normal but after 3 days it no longer went back to normal and every time I restart the color changes either to red (common), blue (common), green, violet, yellow or orange. Other than the display problem, my machine still works fine though. What could be causing this? Is this a display hardware problem, logic board failure, graphics failure...? I've done some research and there are a lot of cases with different causes such as logic board failure, graphics failure, others even said it was a driver issue that has not been addressed by Apple. I can"t do anything about it for now since I have no clue where to look. But I did some test like connecting to an external display. That one proved that it was a hardware problem cause the external display was okay while the one on the have lines. I also tried booting the Drive Genius and at some point that made the mac display run normal again but after a few hours the lines appear again. I also tried to reset both the PVRAM and and the display (control+shift+eject) but none worked. I hope someone could at least shed some light on this or help me in finding a way to address the problem. Thanks!

If you can alter it's symptoms by moving the hinge to change the angle of the display, then maybe it is the display data cable. Regardless, unless you're willing to open it up yourself and start diagnosing, you need to take it to a technician.

Actually, it doesn't really matter. I was thinking of the older models (pre-unibody) where you can take the display apart, but in the unibody's it's all glued together and I don't think taking the display apart to replace a piece inside is an option. I think you just have to replace the whole thing.

So you're down to logic board problem, or display problem. Either way, unless you have an identical computer around to try swapping parts to test where the problem is, you need to take it to a technician.

Or hook it up to and external display and live with it as a desktop.

I hear ya that I need to take it to a technician... it's a late 2011 macbook pro but I don't think it's a unibody. It has screws on the bottom of the computer and I imagine the LCD can be replaced same as another one I had previously. Hopefully it is just the cable though... if I were to take the back off myself does anyone know how I'd test the cable theory?

Would I just move it around, check for a crimping of some kind?

Hi,

I have the same problem and situation than renato.gama

This kind of blue stripes appears sometimes on my screen and I also sometimes have this kind

of "screen shift" (see renato.gama post).

Then, when it appends, the computer will end up by crashing and I will not be able to reboot it for a few days (wheel on the gray screen keeps going and fan starts turning quickly and eventually a black screen...)

The problem is that this bug doesn't occurs always so I sent it to Apple, they didn't see it, send the computer back to me claiming no defect two days ago and just today I got again these bug and the computer cannot boot anymore...

Of course I would like to reinstall the full system like recommanded by Apple but I can't not even restart the computer from the recovery mode or cmd-R or anything else...

What should I do ?? 😕

It is very disapointing as it is my main work tool and I'm loosing days and weeks...

Thanks,

Best Regards,

dbonzon

Marcicasa-

You are describing word for word what happened to me as well. I will attach a pic of what mine looked like so we can compare. DId you have any warranty protection plan on yours left? I have one year left on mine but now i'm wondering if it will be covered. This would be the second time they have to address this issue and i don't want to end up paying an arm and a leg for something that was overlooked by the IT people. Did you ever get a permanent fix to your problem?

I didn't do anything.

Because they want to charge me around 450 Euros + tax to fix it, and judging by what other people said, the problem happened again after this fix.

The thing is, Apple knows they have a flawed machine and won't admitt it because that would make them fix it.
They just pretend nothing is happening and that they never heard of this problem..

So, after 2 years, this "Amazing, great, spectacular machine" that costed me U$2,800 became paper weight. Doesn't work at all anymore.

Nothing to do. We should sue Apple for their poor and careless customer service...
