Making transparent 'text' with FCP?

I'm wondering, with all the iterations of FCP ... if there is a way to do this IN FCP 7 now?

I used to do this with Photoshop ... making a black card with transparent text ... so I could have whatever background I wanted playing THROUGH the cutout text. I'm wondering if there is an easier way in FCP now? Using a composite mode, or something?

Yes, use three layers - the bottom layer is a white color, the 2nd layer is type, the third layer is fill for the type.

Everything else is the same.

You can get a full screen white clip to use on the bottom layer by going the the Generator button at the bottom right of the viewer window (the button with the "A" on it, and click it. From the drop down menu choose Color Solid. Once you edit it to the timeline, double click on it to load it to the viewer and then use the controls to make the color white:
